whippet boy, try and get permission first before and as a last resort you can always sneak onto land, but if your caught all the locals farmers will soon find out and it will defintly mean no permission for the future. heres a template i use, i sent it round to farmers where theres large rabbit populations and ive got some of the best land due to it. you will have to change it a little to suit you and your dog, but it iwll give you the rough idea. get the adresses from www.yell.com just look for farms in your area and you will get tons.

Dear xxxxxxxxxx

I am primarily writing to you because I can appreciate how busy you are all year round and to save me turning up at your door and interrupting you at an inappropriate time.

My name is XXXXXXXXX; I am a falconer and have been for a few seasons now. At this moment in time I have one bird, a first year male Harris Hawk which originally comes from America.

The reason I have contacted you by letter is to ask if, I may be able to come and speak to you at your convenience about the possibility that I may be able to fly my bird on your land at some point. My bird hunts rabbits but on the rare occasion may also catch other vermin. I have third party liability insurance that covers me up to 5 million pound and I’m a member of the Irish Hawking Club.

The bird I’m currently flying weighs, just under one and a half pounds and therefore it poses no risk whatsoever to any livestock.

I can fully appreciate that this request is far from being top of your list of things to do and if the answer is no, thank you for taking the time and reading this letter. If however, you would like me to come and speak to you, I am more than happy to and I have included my phone number and a stamped addressed envelope, and thank you again.

Yours truly,

XXXXXXXX

Bravo!! :yahoo:

That letter is the way for you to go Whippetboy after reading that I’d almost give you my permission! Don’t spoil what could be a good relationship with your local farmers as some one else has said they all talk and it could lead to more permission.

It has and still does bring me new work all the time.

So get writing and good luck and let us all know how it turns out for you.

The lads advocating permission are spot on .A good reputation is hard won and needs working on whereas a bad rep is earned in one outing ,any idiot can poach and most idiots do.Be a man about this and do the right thing .You know it makes sense . :good: Good luck. You will get more permission off the back of a good job but get caught once and you can forget the good feeling of being somewhere and not having to look over your shoulder all the time .

farmers get bothered by all kinds mate ,could we go camping, can i let me dog swim in the lake, can i park me caravan, trailer in the farm, etc etc and all usually with no offer of anything in return, last week a local farmer asked me to repair a chimney top for him i took my permission letter, plus insurance cert and said i did not money for the work, but could i run the dog, bingo got about 750 acres, not much but word will go round and im allready lining up the next farm down.it does take years to gain farmers trust, but if you get caught poaching you will see that you get nothingfor ever.if you had a field a some lads ran thier dogs on it you would nt like it.good luck ps golf courses are usually quiet at night and have footpaths across them and word would probably not get back to local farmer if you got caught.

your right mate most do, ive sent otu abotu 20 of these letters and out of it ive gotton 7 farms, 2 of which has enough rabbits to keep me going all season :D. for the sake of 40 stamps its well worth it. youve nothing to loose except the price of a few pints. its what it would cost you in petrol anyway going door to door some day. :)

Golf courses, so long as you don't mess up the greens they won't bother coming after you, groundsmen usually live off site and the courses have plenty of cover......

WB wait until harvest is over before writing any farmers, they don't really have time for anything but getting crops cut.
