Well, fuckwit, if you'd actually done any reading round the subject you might have come across the 'jill jab'. Mind, you aren't half as clueless as your vet. Quote Link to post
scarecrow243 24
come on guys and girls when are people going to stop jumping down other peoples throats just because somebody dosent know everthing about ferrets or dogs or guns does not mean they arent as good with them as yourself everyone has to start somewhere so give them a break and try to help them rather than put them down at every chance you get Quote Link to post
firkin ferreter 3
nice to see you done your research befor breeding them i didnt want to breed them fuckwit i was told to by the vet ,she was losing weight and fur the vet recommended breeding her tried to get a vesectamised hob for a few weeks but couldnt find one as i didnt want the jill to get worse found a small hob to use .yes i know nothing about ferrets ,i bought them to work there housed well and well handeled if you have no advice f**k off ! I do agree that vet advice to breed was pretty poor to be honest as I would have thought they would have said jill jab or spay. Unless you want kits in the future, after these litters then I would either get them spayed or to make more financial sense if your brood may increase in the future, get a strong, healthy hob about a year old and have it vasectomised. I had mine done a few years back and whilst it cost me just under £70 it was dosh well spent as it has saved me hundreds over the years compared to spays/jabs etc. The only downside is that jills can occasionally get pyometra as a result but I believe this to be rare. In all the matings over the years I only ever had one jill get it. Sadly I did lose her as she didn't show any clinical signs until too late as she had closed pyometra according to the vet. I only took her to the vets as she seemed a bit warmer than usual and a bit quieter ( but not much). She was scanned and I gave the nod to have her spayed there and then and to remove the uterus. However whilst under the vet rang me to say she had had the infection for some time. Said I would not have known at all. Think he too was shocked because the staff had been playing with her that same day on her leash at the vets. Unfortunately her uterus wall had stuck to her bladder and try as he might he couldn't separate the two. I agreed to have her pts ( still cost me nearly £, same cost as if the op had gone ahead) because the infection could have burst at any time and caused a slow and painful death. It was damned hard I can tell you. Ferrets are very good at hiding illnesses and I took a seemingly healthy ferret on outward appearances to the vets and came home with a dead one. I know I made the right decision though. It has not put me off using a vasectomised hob though. If your ferrets are in season now which I presume they are then you should notice their vulvas start reducing in size when mating has been successful. This generally shows in anything from a few days to a week. You will know when jills are done though generally as they start nipping at or squealing at the hob as if to say I've had enough. If you want to keep the kits make sure jills are separate as I have had jills lose litters through being housed with other jills. They will usually give birth within 42 days of a successful mating. If your jills look a bit ropey now though don't be totally surprised if the kits don't survive though. Pregnancy especially 'real' ones can take a lot out of jill. Make sure you give them plenty of good feeds whilst pregnant to ensure their own health as well as their kits. Mine used to enjoy a weekly treat of an egg mixed with goat's milk. Don't give cows as it makes them squit as ferrets are lactose intolerant so cannot digest cows milk properly, hence the runs. Good luck Edited July 26, 2009 by firkin ferreter Quote Link to post

The one 8,456
Mate you've probably left the hob in long enough in a week or so the Jill's swelling will go down and you should know for sure the Jill's pregnant for a day short of six weeks and as above use this time to read up on them as your vets crap Quote Link to post

Getting into a strop because someone suggests you haven't really attempted to find out about something isn't on. There's no excuse for 'knowing nothing' about ferrets, when there's a wealth of info on here and other sites like Ferret Central. Admittedly there's also a lot of crap spoken, sadly some of it on here too, but a specific question to clear up a point of confusion is rather different to the 'tell me all you know about.......' sort of thing that we get here. That's just idleness on the part of the poster. Quote Link to post
Maria_ferrets 0
You've still got a chance to spay her.. If you make an appointment within the next couple weeks to get it done. As someone else said, chances are that the kits won't even survive. Quote Link to post
