best age to start them

Recommended Posts

I just let my saluki bitch chase what she saw whilst out walking, with no real expectations and she has come on fine, took her lamping at 9 month a couple of times she did fine, spent the last 3 months letting her chase rabbits, im going to start her properly in sept, she will be 16 months old then, again with no real expectation, hopefully come the end of her first season, she will know the score, best of luck with your pup, atb Richard

im going to take them out to watch first. when they get a bit older if they pull for a bunny they get sliped on a bunny. & should i also get them a couple of ferreted rabbitts to start them off on knowing what they are doing if so what age should i start giving them a few.

I start mine on rabbits when they are about 12 months you can tell when a dog is ready for a couple of runs some dogs start earlier than others. The best thing to do is spend as much time as you can on training them over the summer and not worry about when you are going to be running them. I think te training and time spent on them as a pup is the most important bit. The more you put into them as pups the more you will get out of them when there older.

But when you do come round to start them mate dont give them too much or expect too much from them. Always best just to give them 2 or 3 easy runs always trying to inish on a high note keeping the young dogs confidence up.

got 2 saluki greyhounds & just wondering what age to start them people tell me 9 month people tell me 11 month just looking for a true answer reilly thanks. tom!

i personly think u should give them a ferreted rabbit at 6 month, then fetch them on slowly.i would not let them run hare till there 16-18 month old but small bitches come on faster than larger dogs,a bitch of 23" i'd run at 14 month but bigger dogs take longer to mature and may look ready on the outside but r not ready in side, you could blow a dogs lungs by running it too early also if run too early they dont seem to run for as many years as a dog thats had time to mature :big_boss:

dogs do take longer than bitches to mature mate, its good to see when a dog is given time not given away when he as not done the the job even if he's only a pup

there is no set age tom, people will tell you all diffrent ages 6month to 18 months!

you know your own dogs you will know when they are ready,

i have two on now that are just a year old .

one was well ahead of the other so she started

at alot earlier on the lamp ,just sqatters and easy runs.

the other pup went out only a couple of times then the season finished.

for me its all about knowing your dog.

and we know that from the basic training

all the best with your pups ,
