another 100 acres of ferreting permission from a lady who thought we were lost

well,myself and john-b had planned a trip up to our permission yesterday.i decided to take the new pup along with old faithful (sally)and bouncer. i also took my hob ferret as i wanted to get the pup a couple of ferreted rabbits to get him started and also to get used to seeing what it was all about.john also had the air rifle with himwhich turned out to be a good idea as there were rabbits everywhere.well the pup done really well,he marked the setts well.the ferret done what was expected and bolted us a few rabbits with no lay ups,which to be honest i was expecting as there were squeakers everywhere and im not one for ferreting this time of year unless its really necessary.anyway after we had a couple of runs with the dogs we decided to pacu up and start shooting.after we had drove backwards and forwards for a couple of hours taking rabbits with the gun out of the van windows.a lady stopped us enquiring if we were lost.so juhn struck up a conversation with her and mentioned about the rabbit population on her land.we have to drive past this land to get onto our other permission but it is another neighbouring farm to the ones we are on so it was an added bonus.anyway,the lady jumped at the chance to have us on and asked us to call back a bit later on that evening to give us a map of the boundaries .when john mentioned it was another 100 acres i thought he was pulling my chain until he said we had to call back for a map and that they were going to point out the boundaries to us.anyways we went back to the ladies house and there was the map,her husband kindly pointed out where we could go and also pointed out that there was a couple of setts he would like us to take a look at.the first sett was about seven holes which didnt look as though it was in use ,the next sett........well what can i say...but its fecking huge!!!! and must run for some 100+ yards ,but it will not phase us,lolwe have also scored for a lot of woodland which is over run with all kinds.......so....watch this space as im sure we will be in for some big bags this year ...happy hunting every one

im really looking forward to it and i think i can also say the same for john.we were suprised just how much game was on the new land that we got.the woman said on a night time it looks like the field is moving with the ammount of rabbits that is on there and she wasnt wrong.whe give it a quick blast with the lamp and there was rabits everywhere but 90% of them were out of shooting range and i haveng started the pup on the lamp as yet but we have some of the best ground to get im started.i think its also fair to say we will need about another 200 purse nets and a couple of long nets for one of the setts in the womans back yard.the council also have a large field at the end of the land we have and we are also allowed on there.the council have put up rabbit netting all around the place and they have also covered one of the large setts with it but the rabbits have totally destroyed the netting wich is something i have never seen before.i will get some pictures the next time we go up on there and put them up so youse can all have a look at the size of the warrens and the damage these little blighters have caused.

im not sure how long ago it was when the sett was covered with the netting but it has been chewed through and the field that belongs to the council that has also been netted has been dug under.this is part of the large warren that is in the woman's back yard.we will soon put a dent in the populatinn with the team once the season kicks in properly and ive got the dog up and running properly and the ferrets are back to full working fitnes.until then its just fun with the guns to dwindle the numbers down a bit

Good news on the new land Col, sure it will produce plenty. Please don't be pushed into 'doing your bit' before the season starts.

As a few will know, i think there's no need to put a ferret underground out of season, the rifle is the best way to slim things down if it has to be done, hitting the half to threequarter grown rabbits, leaving the fully grown, not leaving nests to starve to death underground with no milk.

A pup won't notice 8 weeks until it starts mate.

alright brimmer mate. we wont be doing any more ferreting now until the season starts.i took the ferret out with us on our lat trip out just to get a run or two for the pup which he got .the ferret was put back in the box and back in the van the soon as that job was done.we got a good few half grown rabbits with the gun as the bigguns were scarce on the groundbut saying that there was a shed load of really small squeakers on the ground so by the looks of things they are still having young.in all honestyi think the woman was just pleased to have found a couple of lads willing to try and get he rabbit problem under control for her no matter how long it takes us to do it ,plus im going to have a word in the father in laws ear and see if i can twist his arm to get him on there with his harris hawks as i think we are going to need a couple of extra sets of hands on board with this number .but we will see how we get on once the season gets into full swing..all the best for the coming season mate ,col

Best thing is all the new permission is sand aswell where the others we have a like a slate/shale and rock no word of a lie it's hard to walk over these sets without falling in as they are only about 1 foot deep don't mind digging that of needs be, part of the deal was I have to put SKY in his 2 holiday cottages at the bottom of his land but that's a small price to pay...
