Leeview 791
i also think that if an animal bites then it is not worth keeping and should be killed. so, you want to use it for ferreting, which may involve it biting a rabbit, but if it bites YOU, it should be killed , surely, training/handling a kitt/ferret is the only way of teaching it what to bite, or not too,so the blame for a biting ferret would fall on YOU, and your failure to socialise the ferret, rather than the ferret itself I use lurchers for rabbiting in general which "bite" rabbits and there is NO way would I tolerate a dog biting anyone, never had to do it yet but the first time a dog did would be the last, end of. Pray tell how you teach a ferret what to bite and what not to? Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

If you're talking about repeated, nasty bites because the ferret is a nervous/aggressive type, and no amount of handling helps, then I'd agree. Quote Link to post

Y.I.S Leeview So a pup's not a dog then? You didn't mention pup, but there is a distinction between play biting and nasty biting, and I used a pup as an example. You as a long time ferret keeper obviously know this, and I reckon you should be trying to put this across to the inexperienced keepers instead of advocating culling, except as a last resort. The one 8,456
Bring the ferret close to your mouth and make a loud sharp TISSSSSHHHH or CHISSSSH noise in its face. The type of noise that they make at each other when annoyed so they know to back off. I find it works very well if you start when they are young and just playing, as soon as they go to latch on even when playing, make the 'tish' noise. Keep repeating. It doesn't take long. The only time it deffinately doesn't work is if you have a deaf ferret!! Try it, it might work. I have grave doubts that i would place my face near a biting ferret Quote Link to post

No I dont take pups rabbiting I take dogs i.e adults, of course there is a distinction between play biting and nasty biting, you mentioned the pup as an example, your last sentence? so would you keep in your team of workers a ferret that had turned and bit you more than once? The one 8,456
Imagine going TSSSSSSSsssshh in its ear you spook it whats the closest thing for it to latch onto your nose even im no that daft LOL Quote Link to post
aston_shooter 0
Squeeze it's back foot, failing that hold it under water and it'll let go, although I wouldn't try picking it again straight away as it'll probably be even more p*ssed off ha ha. Touch wood I've never been latched onto before, I've had one have a snap but that was my fault for startling it. If you handle them well enough it's unlikely that you'll get bitten properly, whenever anyone asks me about mine and whether they're vicious I'll happily hold any of them next to my nose and I'm confident they will not bite me. One day I'll come un-stuck though ha ha! Quote Link to post

A working animal that you can't trust is no good to anybody. I feel any working animal should be used to being grabbed in a number of different ways, I get my pups used to be picked all sorts of ways, same with the ferrets as kits. Quote Link to post

Well, Prick, this idiot has formed his opinion of you, not due to your perverted friends, but because you would quite happily whack a ferret on the ground in order to get it off you. And now that you're stating a ferret should be killed if it bites you, well, what can I say, apart from you're a PRICK, LOL!!!! Idiot! Quote Link to post
winter hare 2
i had a polecat hob latch on to my finger last year i flicked its nose and it came off but i had a black nail for 4 mouths. Quote Link to post
badgeroy 3
had one brought in here once as soon as i took it out the box it tied to bite me, it bit itself decided i had bitten it and went nuts !!! every time i got it of my hand it would latch on some where else before i could get my hand away. i eventually had to hold it still with my foot across it shoulders and prise it mouth open with the other hand, then i was able to get a better hold and the ferret and it calmed down. took a while but it doesn't bite anymore and never bite like that first time 9 bite wounds in about 60 seconds as said if handled well and often it should never bite like this Sorry but that made me laugh i could just picture it.
