If you own a property but leave it empty for over 6mths. They are giving local councils the right to seize that property for up to 7yrs to house homeless people.

You work your arse off to own your own property, it should be up to you what you do with it. Im actually speechless.

Could help locals in places like the lakes where southerners have mopped up all the houses, paying over the odds for houses and cottages and pricing the local young ones out of their OWN area! They turn up for a week in summer, have a walk, buy a loaf then feck off back down south for the rest of the year! :realmad:

Surely thats down to the government also, if people cannot afford to buy houses in their own area. Whatever the reason it is still not right. Its like saying, you buy a 4x4 and dont drive it for 6mth because you want to drive your car instead, they have the right to give it to someone to use for 7yrs cos they cannot afford to buy their own car

Its theft surely?

Forgot to say they have included some sort of loophole that prevents this happening to peers or ministers

If they built more council houses instead of selling land off at premium prices to housing companies they wouldnt have this problem!!!

A little over simplefied, Molly; if I was to go abroad again, I could leave my house empty for as long as I liked, but if my aged parents were to die, and their heirs didn't sell or rent or otherwise occupy their house within six months, the council could put in homeless people, including assylum seekers. Theoretically you could remove them once a sale had been agreed, but what state would the house likely be in ? And remember that "possesion is 9/10s of the law" nonsense. Most lawers are allready forcasting court cases as to the legallity of this proposed new law. Only under Labour could anything like this even be contemplated. Still, like Home Information Packs,(£1000), I.D. cards, (£100), etc, it is just another way for Labour to screw us. Don't get me started on the proposal to increase the t.v. tax to £200 to pay the likes of Rossy's obscene wages. Rant over.

Cheers. :diablo:

It's a bit different when you're talking about 4x4s! The young people in the lakes are having to look at mortgages around 200k+ for their first home, whilst earnings have remained low. It's a rural economy. We get a lot on the TV here about the damage done by these southerners buying up second homes...the young ones are having to move out of the area away from their own villages because some rich southerner wants a cottage in the lakes for a couple of weeks a year. They've now started to do something about it locally...but it's to little to late I fear. Money talks.

CORPORATE THEFT - like Sky TV

If you own a t.v.set, you dont HAVE to have Sky, but you do HAVE to pay the tax, (lisence fee), for BBC, now that is GOVERNMENT theft.

Cheers.

Cragman, your'e missing the point. I sympathise with people in rural areas and young prople starting on the property ladder, but this proposed law affects everyone. My parents, in their 80s have lived in their house all their lives, it was a council house that they saved to buy and it would be the only thing they could leave to their family. But if we don't sell it within 6 months of their deaths the council can just put assylun seekers in it !!!

Cheers.

Chartpolski, the article i read didnt state it was just for people who inherited houses after a death. It was more about the hypocracy that it didnt apply to ministers etc who own more than one house but dont live in them. It implyed it was for anyone who had an empty property!

I think I read the same article in a right wing blog, basically saying how can the Blairs £3.5 million house in London stand empty, (they couldn't find anybody who could afford the rent they were asking ). This was just rhetoric. I don't think this law will ever be passed as it came out of the Office of the Deputy, (dawg), Prime Minister, and he is so discreditted now, any thing associated with him will be ridiculed.

Cheers.

Fair point mate. I thought that this law was being aimed specifically at the rural communities for the reasons I stated. How stupid of me to think that Labour would be helping out our rural friends! Asylum seekers? That sounds better.
