New prize structure for Birr Terriers & Lurchers

Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine is putting up €50 for the top terrier and lurcher at Birr and an additional €100 for the top dog overall thus giving the overall champion €150 cash. Plus Albert will give a magazine subscription worth €20 to each class winner.

He has taken the various comments on the forum on board and says if the entry justifies it the prizes will go up again next year and he will seek additional sponsorship to try to bring the prize structure up to the level of the other sports.

Shamie, Matt and I have done our bit to get this commitment from him - now its up to you.

Auld Boy,

Tommy told me he had put up the prize structure but as usual had neglected to mention all the prizes including a specially engraved tankard I am putting up for the winner to keep. There will be other prizes including class trophies, rosettes, dog meal, leads etc

The judges are a matter for the club to select BUT I know for a fact the terrier judge last year was completely fair -IT WAS MY BROTHER! and he had no axe to grind. He has kept working terriers for many years but while he has raced one of his terriers he doesn't show regularly so owes no one any favours. AND his terrier winner most certainly DID not get out of his van or the van of any club member!

Auld Boy,

Having moved some way towards addressing points made about prizes at Birr this incoming year I have now taken up some of the comments about judging. As a judge myself of gundog tests, trials, open shows and championship shows I know that generally speaking only one or two peope are really happy with any judge's decisions but my decisions are always based on my own opinons of the dogs or dog work in front of me not who is on the end of the lead. Friends who choose to enter know I treat them the same as everyone else.

The Mid Antrim Club have my full confidence and terrier & lurcher enthusiasts should be grateful to them for promoting terrier and lurcher showing in Ireland. Yes the club makes a little money from the show but then so do all the sporting clubs who run events at the Fair.

However I have taken the matter of the judging at Birr up with the committee of the club which includes my brother as Vice Chairman. And I am satisfied that the two judges appointed for Birr will be two of the best and most qualified people to judge terriers and lurchers at any show in Ireland.

The terrier judge is an accomplished all round country sports person who has kept terriers for over 40 years and has won virtually every major award that can be won. His record of practical terrier work is second to none. If I had a terrier I should be delighted to show under this guy and have his opinion.

The lurcher judge is again a well known all round sportsman from an impeccable and accomplished sporting family. He has kept both working terriers and lurchers and in his day had some fine and fast working lurchers.

We have agreed to keep the identity of both judges secret until the day of the show to prevent canvassing but if anyone has a complaint about their judging I would like you to make it to me personally.

I have done my best to answer all the points raised by genuine terrier & lurcher guys on this site. I hope none of you doubt my sincerity in trying to organise good terrier & lurcher events within our Game Fairs and my determination to continue to run the best Game Fairs in Ireland.

Looking forward to Birr, a crowd of us will be going Sat & Sun, i hear there's a 2 day ticket for the lurcher & terrier ones :D who do i get intouch with about the tickets, does anyone have a phone number :D

Bluebell,

In spite of all the flack we have been getting over judges, judging, prizes, etc ( which I think is not deserved) I will repeat the offer I made at Shanes for the event at Birr two tickets for the price of one for Terrier & Lurcher exhibitors. i.e. €15 for two tickets. BUT this offer must be taken up before 12th August - no exceptions. Cash, PO or cheque ( made out to Game Fairs Ireland Ltd) address and no of tickets to me at Cranley Hill, 5b Woodgrange Road, Downpatrick BT30 8JE Tel 028 ( 048) 44839167.

Now with the best prizes on offer, the best admission prices, and two judges with an impeccable record of keeping class working dogs, the best range of stands other than Shanes, now its up to you to give the best entry of terriers and lurchers ever. Success breeds success so if we have your support you will find that we will increase our support for the Terrier & Lurcher events even further in future years.

Madra,

I can assure you the judges will judge fairly and the terrier judge is not far off the status of Gary Middleton. No one will influence them on the day but unfortunately we know that if we publish names the judges get a lot of phone calls. That is why the organising club do not want to name the judges.

I know I personally have confidence in them and as someone with an impeccable reputation of judging in my own field I don't say that lightly.

I will make you a challenge contact me personally and I will send you a ticket for the Sunday. If you feel the judging has not been fair then you don't have to pay me. If you see it is fair, as it will be, you pay for the ticket.
