Red fox survey-changes before and after hunting ban

Hi all,

 

I am a Master student at Leeds university and for my final project I am investigating if the is a change in the population size of Red foxes in England and Wales due to the ban on hunting with Hounds.

I am doing so by comparing the observations and experiences from different groups that work or observe foxes since before 2005. I am contacting conservationist, farmers, landowners and gamekeepers for their experiences before and after the hunting ban was enforced.

I am lacking information from gamekeepers and/or people working with game species, so if you or anyone you know fits into this please take couple of minutes to fill in the survey via the link below. The results will be shared with NFU and several Wildlife Trusts throughout England and Wales, so please see this as an opportunity for you opinion on the subject to be heard and shared with these groups. Others are also welcome to fill in the survey.

The survey is anonymous so feel free to give me your opinions, and if you feel like you cannot, will not or a question does not apply to you just skip it.

I think that there are lesss foxes about now as they are often being shot in large numbers with rifles at night.

Im a arable farmer and also have a game farm and have seen a very big decline in foxes since the ban!., due to the fact of a lot more of them being shot now as every other traditional method is being made allegal.

Hi J Darcy. I live about seven miles outside Glasgow.Here the foxes are growing in numbers and seem to be getting less afraid too.atb. Catcher 1

there is plenty of them where i do rabbiting all ways see them out on the lamp about 3 or 4 a night of each bit of land cubs and adults

It would be really useful if I could get you to fill the survey, however, not for Scotland and Ireland as the ban was earlier in Scotland and I am just measuring for 4 years and it is still legal in Ireland.

Im a arable farmer and also have a game farm and have seen a very big decline in foxes since the ban!., due to the fact of a lot more of them being shot now as every other traditional method is being made allegal.

 

Would it be possible for you to fill in the survey as a game farmer, the response is not what I expected and it would good to have your opinion in my survey.

I have seen a decline in numbers and also the general health of Foxes is not what it once was........lots of weedy and mange ridden specimens about now.

 

Now this is no slur on lads that use rifles, but it is hard to see what condition a fox is in from 100 + yards, at night through a scope.

 

I was talking to a lad last week who had shot over 30 in the 10 days previous and he had no intention of stopping there.

 

Hunting with dogs was able to be more selective when it was legal.

 

But hey, the goverment and anti hunting groups know best!

all the fox around here seem to be mangey street fox that whould starve if they had to live in a field with no bins to mooch in.

30 in 10 days just sums up the rifle brigade Wilf. If foxes are a pest, taking lambs etc then fine it has to be sorted. But the rifle boys are just out to shoot as many foxes as possible & they aint got the brains to see what they're doing is wrong. 30 foxes in 10 days aint pest control, its killing for the sake of killing & they're givin all shooters a bad name.
