artic 595
Nowadays to poach is very easy. IF your caught, then it would be hard to prove in many cases as lack of evidence and good solicitors are at hand. You only have to read previous cases and see the results are mainly negative. A long time ago, it was very hard for the poacher, and very risky indeed, but they needed to do it, to pay bills and feed the family (that's not a cheesy line, they really needed to do it) and if caught you were truely "HAD IT" People who poach today really do it for the wrong reasons. leegreen 2,153
They are still out there, why only the other day I saw a wizened old fella......long overcoat, a beaten up hat at a juanty angle and an even more beaten up leather bag. He had with him a scruffy gray dog of non-descript breeding which was held only with some bailing twine about his neck. And as he slipped over a gate in the gloom smoking his battered clay pipe, I thought to myself "Hmmm.......I bet he is one of the old style poachers!" Probably a nonce, should of beat him up and kicked his dog. Quote Link to post

Country Joe 1,411
35 years ago an old friend of mine, who happened to have a cracking lurcher, was up in court on a poaching charge, the water bailiffs produced the frozen salmon into the courtroom along with the snare attached to a length of fencing wire, the judge asked how the method was used and my friend explained the techniques of how to snare Salmon, the judge appeared fascinated, but it didn't help my mate who was still fined £50.
