br4568hldrs 16
The poachers tools these days are a pc and a 4wd. Times move on simple as that! even people who use the old traditional ways such as snares and long nets do it as pest control to clean places out not just to catch one or two. How many people go ferreting these days without a locator? old style poachers dont exist they are nothing but romantic legend. I couldnt disagree more! I was brought up to go out with the dogs for a mouch, only take what you can eat and how to respect the game and its habitat. as a young lad I knew and still know every inch of the goverment owned land round my way. I have never been able to get permission because the land owners want the sport just for themselfs. Its the fact that we call these thugs with no respect for the countryside poachers that we forget that there are still alot of real poachers out there that have been shown how to have respect, not to be greedy and how to conduct there ways without being caught. to the part were you say "How many people go ferreting these days without a locator?" well I still see young lads meeting in the same place me and my pals did when we were kids, terriers, lurchers and a old pillow case with ferrets in, and Im pretty sure they wont be using a locator when they re still bargining the rabbits and hairs caught for free fish and chips for the rest of the week, so there lunch money can pay for some cider at the weekends! Please dont be so nieve that one for the pot poachers dont exist and their simple methods dont still get used, because they certinly do! James 1 Quote Link to post

LAZYBSTARD 225
wherever you find landowners and estates. or any forbidden ground . you will still find poachers . old and young . they just wont fit the romantit notions that some folk have. ,a bit like the proper old romany gypsies, many have died away and now we are left with many wanabe's.. as with the many wanabe old style poachers, now they go out, clear a wood of 100's of pheasant over night and not taking just the 1 for the pot. now its stealing some grannies lifes savings to bye pot Quote Link to post

NEWKID 27,132
Had a salmon a few months back caught with a fox snare by an old poacher round here, was fortunate to sart as a lad with " old poachers", taught respect, loved to see wildlife not just kill it, it was an adventure not a killing spree. I'm thankful for a correct education, and still love to see an owl a badger whatever at night and find a nest or see a weasel ect in the day.The old lads understod nature and the countryside and their game bag was never empty. NEWKID 27,132
IMO lots of the old romantic stuff was just that...Romance. I am sure that there are still lads out walking the land that have never been caught, and they have taken everything with fur and feather. I am pretty sure they do not poach for the money but for the sport, the buzz and feeling their legs turn to jelly. Its a rush, just as it probably always has been. Since the days when the labourers took the squires game. A real poacher, whether 50 years ago or now is worlds apart from the tracky-wearing chavs. To me, the real poacher (of whatever age) is a man who loves nature. He can show you where to find a pheasants nest, or walking past a fallen stump he cannot help himself but to stoop down and have a quick peek to see if Jenny Wren has built her nest. He will tell you if there is a squirrel using a drey just by its appearance and he knows the ways and routes of the local foxes and deer. He is not just a killer, a harvester of game, he is part of the english countryside just like his parents before him. He wouldnt kill a summer leveret "because he could", but he would smile and wish the little fellow well, hoping to meet its aquaintance again maybe come the colder months when the hare wouldbe much harder to catch. He gets more pleasure from seeing the dogs work and the hunt than the taking of life. Although i cannot condone anything illegal i have to wish the genuine poacher good luck. JD Thats what I was trying to say in my post, that's how I remember it exactly, romantic or not. well said Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
My grandad was a poacher and my dad wethey learnt me ll i.ve done poaching in the past im all above bored now poaching as learnt me fieldcraft and the respect of the land with my dad grandad I still set my long nets the tradilional way i.ve always got a catapult with me cuz you never no I feel a little ironic typing this but they TAUGHT you well Simon, Simon, Simon....what are we going to do with you? Learned in this context only sounds incorrect to your modern ears because of the acceptance of "taught" being the only right word. For the more more northerly folk on here the word learn is entirely acceptable as they use it in the manner in which is was intended by our nordic forebears. Learn means both learn and taught in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian so it's merely a hangover from those days when we sailed on dragon boats, drank Skol and listened to A-Ha. So rabbiting man might say Min Bedstefar laerte mig godt my grandad taught me well. You effete southerners find it an affront to your sensibilities because it doesn't fit well when you are constructing verses on your poetry nights Quote Link to post
lancer 13
poachers couldent give two fucks about a wrens nest or how a squirrels dray looks, cant think of any one i know giveing a squirrel or a wren much thought when your knocking pheasants out of trees in the middle of the night, probably piss me sell laughing if dragging a net through a pool and the person on the other end mentioned a wren or a squirrel, poaching is done for proffit and food, what you describe is a pleasant walk .
