The 62-year-old reportedly hid in a tent in the centre of the circle before jumping out and firing over the heads of a group of tourists, thought to be from Norway.

The incident happened following the appearance of a crop circle in fields close to the village of Allington, near Devizes, Wiltshire.

The group of tourists fled and called police, who sent armed officers and a helicopter to the scene at around 2pm on Monday.

The 300ft crop circle is thought to be of an ancient bird.

Nearby Cannings Cross Farm lost thousands of pounds worth of crops in 2007 after a 500ft pattern appeared in a field.

Wiltshire Police said a 62-year-old man, from Oldham in Lancashire, had been arrested for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He has been released on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

A spokesman for the force could not confirm whether the man worked on the land.

Here you go

"Kevin Hunter points to the gap in the wall where his gun cabinet used to be. That was in Aprill 2008-before he was arrested, held for 11 hours in a police cell, questioned, his house searched and his guns and ammo taken away, and his certificate revoked.

Why? He was accused of threatening dogwalkers trespassing on the land he used to shoot, near Nuneaton in Warwickshire. His case never went to court- the Crown Prosecution dropped it. The evidence against him was to flimsy, Kevin maintains.

The threat of prosecution hung over Kevin for four months.Even after the case was dropped, Kevins guns and certificate were not returned to him. He challenged the revocation of his certificates in court, but lost. He sold his guns at a knock-down price because he couldnt afford the storage fees.

Sporting Shooter editor James Marchington has seen the interview transcripts and witness statements, and he believes there was a fundamental misunderstanding during Kevins initial police interview. The officer thought Kevin had fired his gun deliberately to intimidate trespassers, but this was never clarified in the interview. Instead Kevins explanantion of safety procedures was mistaken for a tacit admission of guilt.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this case, it is a poignant reminder of how any shooters life can be turned upside-down by allegations that need never be proven in court.

Loss of income as well as sport.

Kevin and his family have been hit hard. For months he felt unable to work-he is a professional truck driver. He has remortgaged his house, and blames the stress for making his wife ill. He has lost his beloved sport, which gave him the chance to unwind in the countryside after a hard week on the road.

Perhaps most of all, he feels he has lost his good name. " I just want to clear my name, put all this behind me and move on with my life" he told Sporting Shooter. And some of you lads shoot land where theres a footpath you must be mad

Its time that society got its priorities the right way round.

Years ago the tresspassers would have been told "tough shite, don't tresspass then". Now they seem to think that their human rights have been violated. Surely human rights belong to everyone and should be balanced.

So to all you gunners out there............be careful who or what you point your gun at. One day a pidgeon will have human rights!
