intro from a wannabe

I just joined this forum. It looks fascinating. I am interested in learning about using lurchers as hunting dogs. I know nothing about it and have never seen it done. I am from the US and so maybe it isn't as popular here or I am just in an area that it isn't much done.

As a boy, I used to want to hunt a Basset to push rabbits out for a Saluki to catch. I imagine that desire stemmed from my still dismal shooting abilities. Until I recently came across a reference to lurchers, I wan't even aware that folks actually did this. The honest truth is that I will probably never actually acquire the dogs and do it (I spend all my recreation time on our horses). I am just interested in looking and learning and doing a bit of daydreaming.

Nothing wrong with dreaming, mate! I used to day dream about living in an isolated, country cottage and having miles of ground to wander at will, setting vermin traps!

You have to have that dream first ..... :good:

We have bred but not anymore. With the way the market is, it is much, much cheaper to just buy them ready to start training. We don't sell much either though. I'll sometimes take on a project horse if it is a good enough bargain and a lot of potential. I bought a very spooky appaloosa a couple years ago as a favor to a friend so she wouldn't get herself or her kids killed. He was, in their estimation, unrideable. He is now my main mount and jumping over 4 feet. We have a couple we have trained for the show pen, one I ride as regular transportation and a team of Belgians (Brabants over there, I believe) that I use for mowing hay and logging in the winter as well as heavier portage.
