pointer28 1
Hey all, This is a great thread, I'm thinking of buying a beginners knife making kit to get me started, can anyone recommend one. Would love to hear how everyone else is getting on with theirs and see some pics also.
jjbull 38
i would suggest making hidden tang there is more room to make a knife your way i have made both and do enjoy making the hidden tangs some good cheap blades that take a good edge are karesundo or something similar, i made the mistake of buying the handmade blades and now realise i havent done them justice and wish i could redo them the full tangs i had made and designed for me by stuart mitchell in sheffeild when making the blade tape it up for your protection and the blades dont sand in the house the dust turns up for ages be careful with the dust some of it is quite irratating draw round the blade on some paper and rough out the shape of the handle to give you some guidlines take your time and make sure you have the right tools handy buy some plasters and get stuck in and enjoy your self it is addictive because you see things with each knife that you can improve on and so make another, they make good preesents for people which gives you the excuse to buy more blades, dont expect it to come out like the ones youve seen on british blades there are some very skillfull people on there but dont give up everyone starts somewhere and make sure you take lots of pictures and pm of you need any advice

Guest baldie
"Thats not a knife..........This is a knife" :11: Daft as it may seem, the croc dundee film was the inspiration behind this knife, its a coffin handled bowie, the blade came from one of the last remaining "little mesters" in Sheffield called Cooper, who is part of a rapidly dying breed of men The blade has a very large blood groove, and decorative scalloping. The handle is made from an ebony surround to the tang, slabbed with cocobolo, which is a beautiful purple colour , that goes brown with age, and fabulous grain. The sheath is best hide, made by a very good leathersmith near me.Incidentally, the original bowie knife, carried by col. Jim Bowie, was actually made in Sheffield, by a firm called Wolstenhulme, who are still there today.

AND IT WORKED DUCKWING the last 2 pictures are a carbon steel it gets a lovely patina on it they take a really good edge for a cheap blade and hold it pretty good to most of the other blades are semi stainless in steels i havent heard of before a lot of the spacers are buffalo horn and or rams horn they both take a lovely deep polish i didnt use vulcanised spacer material im a cheap skate at heart and used a dvd box on the full tang blades, i havent made a knife in a while and this is making me want to knock another couple out. i will give you as much help and advice as i can so you can knock something up your really happy with baldie .........thats quite a chopper you have mate
