What you want to do is make him like being in there. Put his food in, don't close the door at first. After he's happy to go in to eat and come back out again, close the door till he's finished, then open it straight away before he's got the chance to moan and carry on. Rinse and repeat, over and over.

When you put him in awake give him something to do in there. Try putting some of his food inside one of those rubber Kong toys, make him work to get it out. That'll occupy him and tire him out ;) Other chews and toys are also a good idea.

Don't let him out when he's crying or he'll soon suss that the more racket he makes the more likely he is to be let out. If he's crying, hard as it is, ignore him till he stops - don't tell him to shut up or shout at him or anything. As soon as he stops, praise and open the door. Then you can start lengthening the time he's got to wait to be let out. Make sense?

Stick with it and he'll soon learn to settle, it shouldn't take too long. A create trained dog is easier for everybody involved. Mine are both crate trained and live in the house - it's invaluable when you need to put them in to keep them out of the way for a bit or when you leave the house and you know you'll come back and not find your sofa eaten  They learn to love it and enjoy having their own space too.

Take them cap locks off will ya?

You're most welcome. All of my dogs have been crate trained and I wouldn't have a dog in the house who wasn't. Plus if they've ever to spend any time at the vets it'll make life easier for them being used to a crate.

I've pinched some of this from another forum - it's ideas of what to stick inside those kong toys. Can't tell you how great they are for keeping dogs busy and out of trouble.

1. Peanut butter and banana - smear the inside of the Kong with peanut butter and fill with mashed banana. Can be frozen to make it last longer.

2. Porridge and tuna/sardines - mix the porridge with boiling water and add a tin of tuna or sardines. Mix together well and fill Kong. Either refrigerate or freeze.

3. Packet mashed potato and almost anything! - Mix up the packet mashed potato (most supermarkets have their own value version) to the consistency that you require and then add whatever else you like - ham, corned beef, chicken, tuna, pilchards, cheese, whatever - then fill the Kong. Again, can be frozen.

4. Chappie is quick and easy as a filling.

5. Cheese spread or value sandwich spreads are great for plugging the hole at the bottom and using as an enticement on the top of the filling.

1 egg, grated cheese and any vegetables your dog likes.

ICED KONG

Plug the end of the Kong with a treat. Turn it upside down in a cup. Fill it full of chicken gravy and freeze.

It might sound silly but honestly .... if they have to work at getting their food it occupies their brain and tires them out, thus they won't be whinging and getting into trouble. If you're feeding dry kibble you can buy a plastic treat ball and put his meal in that instead of in a bowl. Hours of entertainment watching them roll it round to get the food out

I would also suggest you cover the top and sides of the crate with a blanket, make it like a den. Once the pup learns that the crate is a nice place to be he'll go in there on his own and settle quickly.

Good luck with the pup ;)
