Can't speak for other places but in the eighties i used to dig foxes all year round, no shortage and no rifles about to mop up all the little critters. I averaged 70 a year with one Russell bitch, didn't kill all of them, i was happy to see them bolt knowing full well you would get another down the road. I used to hate the rifle brigade, sadly i have now joined them. Quote Link to post
bucky 11
just my opinion but i think during the summer most are pushed to ground with you working that area, unless a vixen in cub or with cubs, atb Quote Link to post

Heat is another factor, if it's to hot they will get in to keep cool. I don't work my dogs through the summer months any more "young and foolish" back then. Quote Link to post
Guest miller1989
Dont get any ideas but besides cubs and/or a vixen with the weather the UK been seeing just maybe the heat will put them to ground cooler there! Quote Link to post

Can't speak for any one else but i had all sorts dog fox's and baron vixens, not every vixen has cubs, but if i was totally honest i didn't give a shit back then. Try to remember this was in the day's before the rifle fad and every bush had a fox in and every earth and you could drop in the old big spots, you could still work a fox in a badger sett back then and every sett i put in to seemed to hold fox after fox. When you here the story's of massive numbers of foxes being shot over the season it makes me cringe, i totally understand keepers and lamb farmers killing to protect their stock but most around here kill foxes for the sake of it and so you never see them in decent numbers any more. I am not knocking the rifle lads, just my observations in the field, as i have said i own a rifle but this gives me the choice of what to shoot and when to shoot it . Guest rodsmith
i work mine all year round,i have to.all my permitions are commercial pheasant/partridge ground however,i will not if too hot.if i didnt, someone else would and yes,i have to deal with the cubs too. dont tend to find that many in the summer months.theres too much cover, even on the wettest days they can find a cool dry spot rather than go to ground.this past season for me has been an exceptional one for fox numbers, ive not had or seen so many nor have i hardly seen any dead on the roads which is nice.where and if possible i do like to let them run for another day(the keepers would go ape if they knew) for sport for another day.
