I started my dogs on dry, and changed to mince with occasional bones 3 or 4 months ago and they are seeming to thrive. I think the pet mince has bones ground in with it though, so maybe they are getting more bone than it would seem. I worried whether I was doing it right at the beginning, but it seems to me that as long as you vary things on a regular basis you will get the right balance in the long run. It won't matter that they miss one vitamin or another for a couple of days if you vary thiings, because somewhere along the line you'll give it them in another food. One thing I do give regularly is cheap fish in oil, it seems to make their coats really glossy. I'd be interested to know what if any vegs you lot add, mine get carrots and cabbage but don't seem keen on other things, but some people seem to think they don't need any at all. doris 6
I have said it once before on this forum, and i'll say it again. The meat landywoods sell is condemened. It goes off in a matter of days, especially the chicken. My dog eats anything but turns his nose up at any L/woods meat. Be careful what you get from them. I'm sure there are other user on this forum that have had the same ex[perience
Bevwallis 7
I have fed a raw diet for a couple of years now so shall share what i do- hope it is of help to someone. This is JMHO but when it comes to raw feeding best thing to remember as far as price goes is that if you buy from anyone whos' business pet food is it shall be expensive. Butchers, slaughthouses and anything wild caught is the best bet. Cheap supermarket food is OK but i try to steer clear of chicken as it is usually so fatty - if you can get friendly with anyone local who has free running chickens and occasionally cuts down numbers they would be better birds for dogs. As a general rule of thumb the more variiety the better- as far as choice of meat i do feed pork and lamb but not weightbearing bones unless you have big dogs. They tend to cause constipation as the bones on larger animals ,such as pigs,is too dense to digest and impaction is the result. I try to stick to what i percieve to be natural prey items- birds, rabbits etc. Tripe is always useful and i feed an amount each day. Whole skinned/gutted rabbits are excellent as they have a good ratio plus small amount of offal. As far as amounts i never weigh food but look at my dog each day and decide how much / what to feed. As i feed a number of dogs and dont have too much time to deliberate over what i pull out of a freezer- nor am i particually clever so i am sure anyone here can feed raw successfully. Best thing to not do is think too much about it-it isnt a complicated process and when first feeding is very much trial and error to find a diet best suited to each dog. Good luck
swanseajack 227
I walked into local butchers when I moved down here, I asked him what he does with his waste (all of it) he was paying for it to be disposed of and saving some bones for the locals as and when. Being a cheeky welsh fecker I said I'll take it all of you, when would you like me to pick it up He looked at me in an odd disbelieving way and said Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays.. then I scrounged a secondhand fridge freezer... been here nearly 4 months and haven't spent a penny on dog food, that's feeding 9 dogs, all are healthy, one or two need to go on a diet before work starts proper !! I do get a bit too much and get overloaded, but I've made a few friends down here and they get it delivered by me (after I sort it ) so everyone's happy... So a tip for you all, go and ask your butcher !!! Shy boys don't get sweeties !!! SJ
skycat 6,173
I stopped getting stuff from Landywoods for the reason given in the earlier post: slightly high meat is fine, but slimy chicken mince that crawls away on its own is a step too far for me plus my dogs really hated it and only ate it after starving for 24 hours. I don't weight any food for my dogs: I look at them and feel their backs and sides: if they look a bit podgy I feed them less for a few days, and if they look as though they could do with a bit more weight on them I feed them more. Easy! In winter we fed minced whole rabbit with veg mixed in, plus chicken carcases, breast of lamb, tripe and some minced beef. Red meat contains the B vitamins and is higher in protein than white meat like chicken and rabbit, though rabbit is not to be classed as a completely white meat if you are feeding whole carcases. Avoid weight bearing bones like lamb and pork leg bones. Chicken bones are OK as the chucks destined for human consumption are super fast growing and go off their legs once they reach a certain weight, but they're killed before then. However, feeding only these types of chicken will result in certain deficiences as the birds are not 'natural' in their make up due to human intervention. Tripe is low in protein but dogs love it and they do well on it providing it is unwashed and whole (I cut it inot hand sized chunks and freeze in bags) but not everyone can access whole tripe. Lots of vits and mins. in tripe and trace elements. A typical meal for a medium sized lurcher (24Kilos) would be for me a handful of meat mince and minced veg, a couple of chicken carcases from the butcher (meat removed but trimmings left) or 4 or 5 chicken wings, a couple of bite sized pieces of tripe and a couple of lamb ribs. That would be for a dog in summer condition, i.e. not in hard work, but a lot depends on the individual dog's metablic rate. Some of mine need far less food than others and some a lot more. Use your eyes and hands not kitchen scales when feeding dogs.

billy_wizz 2
I can recoommend Brian Betteridge to anyone in the Weat Mids area, I'm paying around 25p per lb for minced chicken, lamb, and beef, and 30odd pence for tripe. A tray of chicken thigh bones weighing around 40lb I would guess, with a lot of meat stilll on cost me 3 quid .Add a shredded cabbage , a few carrots, or anything other veg I can scrounge off the missus and it's a cheap way to feed the dogs. The only other thing I give is a cheap tin of pilchards in sunflower oil occasionally, and a handful of mixer. My two have improved 100% since starting using this stuff, the coat on my lurcher pup is really glossy. Tom. Thinking about trying this where abouts in the west midlands is he? It might be worth me traveling if its not to far unless someone can sujest a decent supplier in the leicestershire area?
