Birds Hitting Windows

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago i was getting ready for work and heard a thud against my bedroom window, when i came into the bedroom to see what it was there was an imprint of a bird on the window, and after going outside i found a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker with a Broken neck lying under the window. It had obviously flown into the window and broken its neck.Since then its happened on two other occasions, only it was young blackbirds that had flown into the window and killed themselves.Has anyone else had a similar thing happen, and is there a way to stop it ? My house is covered in ivy,and im thinking maybe this has something to do with it ? or maybe its the position of the sun,as its happened at about 5.45 am on all 3 occasions. Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

You could maybe paint some BOP (Birds Of Prey) on your windows to deter they smaller birds. Not sure if it would attract any larger predators though. Might be worth painting a figure of a man on there as well, that would keep the foxes ect. from running into it and creating a new problem. Hope this helps mate

Leave the window wide open? :whistling:

Or failing that, maybe get a decoy BOP to sit on the sill. Only problem is that you might not get to see any small birds, and be woken up to a flock of crows attacking the fecking thing every morning! That's a tough one mate. :hmm:

EDITED:

You beat me to the BOP idea D. Lover! :D

Bill..........if you have a tree in your garden, what the birds are trying to do is land on the REFLECTION of the tree....thinking they can fly from one to the other. I had it with woodpigeons in my garden last year, only had the one hit the window this year so they're learning ;) Don't think there is a lot you can do to stop it really.......maybe a brightly coloured internal blind may help.

Regards

Rolfe.

We used to get a lot of young birds flying into our windows, what we did (and over the last year or so has seemed to work) was stick up a piece of paper in the middle of the window. Also, you can cut the paper into shapes so long as there is still enough paper there for a bird to notice it doesn't really matter.

I cannot believe what has just happened,no sooner do i post this thread and a young sparrow hits the f**king window !! I've just put it in a box to recover, its not bleeding and has both eyes open, just seems a bit stunned and is breathing rather quickly.Ive looked at the window from outside, and there is a clear reflection of the tree opposite.Think i might try some paper in the window for now.

Make sure the bird has enough room to breath, don't smother it so that it can't breath. Whenh its ready to leave the box it will start to fit.thats what happened to me before so i chucked it out the box and it flew off after about 35minutes of being on the floor. My mate made a figurine of a large fox before and he put that on his windowsil to stop the birds flying into it. Or you could make a scare crow and sit it on the window ledge, stop the magpies as well then ;)

Well, the good news is the sparrow has flown away now,and seemed to be ok.Ive tied some string across the window with some strips of shredded plastic on.The neighbours must think we are having a Hawaian barbecue or something. :clapper: They think im nuts anyway,so the window decoration wont change there oppinion of me. :clapper:

you can buy stickers that are almost invisable to us but the birds can see so they dont fly in to it. if you are bottered about having something in the middle of the window. i will see if i can find where i saw them.

Micky,my brothers just phoned me and told me the same thing. He said you can buy the BOP silhouette stickers from pet shops.Problem is no matter what ive stuck on the window in the last few minutes, its still hard to see anything but the reflection of the house's and trees opposite.Have been here 8 years and never had a problem like this till a few weeks ago.
