Choice of Colour On Your Dog

Funny, isn't it? Ask most sixteen year old, self styled 'King of the Poachers' types what colour is preferable on a lurcher and they'll say; " Black, mate! 'Keeper can't see a black dog at night. Stops him becoming a target! "

I suppose there is a certain nieve logic in that emphatic statement. (Anyone ever heard a sixteen year old make a statement that wasn't delivered as totally incontrovertable? )

But I just happen to keep finding my eye drawn to a photo which that random generator seems to favour, at the bottom of the main page. Originally posted by " Keeps ", it's titled, 'Woodland Chase' and shows an eyeball drawing patch of deepest black, imposed on the subtly mixed hues of browns and golds amidst an autumnal woodland landscape. The dog being the most glaringly obvious feature of the entire shot :icon_eek:

Obviously, Keeps would have been working perfectly legally on permitted ground there, so it doesn't matter if the dog was coated in day glo orange. But doesn't it knacker the old chestnut about 'Poachers Dogs Must be Black'?

I'm not much of a Dog Man myself and would pick a dog for the most off the cuff and probably half crazy reasons. But, seeing that, I think if ever I decided to kit myself out with a lurcher which I ever imagined taking anywhere it shouldn't be? I don't think I'd part with my cash till I'd found one bred for a coat of Real Tree Green! Give the damn thing a sporting chance!

Ok. I'll f*** off back to my own board now. Leave you Dog Men, what ever your ages, to shake your heads and mutter at my intrusion. It was just a passing thought. No offense meant :good:

I prefer black...just because i prefer black dogs, whether it be a lurcher or a spaniel, nothing to do with cammo. I personally think tan/red etc brindles are better for that.

Having said that, the hardest colour dog to rehome in rescues is black as people dont want common looking dogs when rehoming them....greyhounds and lurchers especially

I think this is the pic you are referring to. To be quite honest I wouldnt be bothered what colour a dog is so long as it works well - but then again Im not a poacher   Indie is my son's dog, and he got him because of his breeding, not because of his colour, though you could say he chose him in preference to two brindle dogs that were in the litter.

Pic was taken in the daylight though, where most dogs of any colour would really show, I'd hate to have ran him through those woods in the dark :blink:

Black attracts light and heat thus making it more visible unless your in total blackout circumstances which is unlikely in this country. Imo black has to be the smartest colour for a lean strong dog, next to brindle of course, as sock's grey will show :good:

Does it matter the colour?

As long as the dog does as you want, then the dogs colour really shouldn't be of much importance.

As mikethedog said, black is a smart colour for the stronger, lenier dog. But then again, White looks just as good, coloured dogs all the same...colours colour.

A preference.

IMHO!

I think it does and it doesnt. If there are 2 pups in a litter exactly the same with all the characteristics you want in a dog, you are gonna go for the one you like the look of best. People will always attract to what is the most attractive in their eyes.

And from a womans point of view, id never have a white dog....the bloody hairs show up everywhere

I don't think colour is of importance, a dog is a dog, whatever the colour. But i prefer merles, fawns and white and parti coloured lurchers. Im not a fan of black dogs, i think it's a plain and boring colour and theres too many black dogs about! :11: JMO. :)
