lurcher pup problems

i have a lurcher bitch of 15 weeks old and she is forever bumping herself,but ive found that even the smallest of knocks leaves her crying in pain for the rest of the day,strange cause ive never had a lurcher from a pup before,always got them about 1 year old.also her ear carriage was perfect when i got her and so is her parents,but 1 ear seems to be pointing in the air at the moment so im hoping it will fix itself soon as ive been the vets and got the all clear for any infections,,never thought a lurcher would be this much hard work,,,

You say "bumps" is she bumping into things? Could she have sight problems?

Hi Trace, Im speaking from experience here, my lurcher who us pictured on my addy is the most mardy dog ive ever seen, the slightest knock would make her whine, but put her in a field on the back of her quarry and she'd run through walls, very strange but any vets we visited said "oh another mardy lurcher" spose ut depends on her make up...hopefully someone else will be able to put your mind at rest,

nah,theres nowt wrong with her sight,,when shes out on the field shes a different dog but when shes in the garden playing with my terriers the slightest knock and you'd think shes broken something by the way she whines,she comes across as a bit of a wimp,,maybe its an attention thing,lol

cheers 4 that,,,,,glad to know that ur one is like that also,,,my Bracken has greyhound,deerhound,whippet,collie and bedlington in her so maybe thats why shes like she is,,when i see her battle of wills with the terriers its funny to see how much she cries at the slightest knock

Just a bit of advice here: don't let a lurcher pup rough house it with adult dogs of any sort, not even little ones like terriers. Lurcher pups have a lot of growing to do in the leg department: the growth plates (the knobly bits on the 'wrists' and hocks are very delicate and if damaged by a knock can affect the healthy growth of bone.

 

Yes of course you want a pup to be socialised with other dogs but take it easy and always supervise play.

 

Here I go again with the diet thing! LOL Get the best quality protein into a pup that you can afford: if you feed cheap rubbish expect a sub standard adult which may be plagued with health problems in the long run.

 

Homeopathic Calc Phos is a good remedy for growing pups and helps develop healthy bone: give 1/3 of the human dosage every day, but it won't hurt if you overdose by mistake.

Ahh thats good, sounds like a clumsy pup! Hounds are notorious for screaming the place down for the slightest thing.

thanks so much for that advice,,,,,i do supervise the terriers when they are playing with the lurcher and i even bring the lurcher in cause shes so laid back,,i buy the best food for her,been giving her a mix of Chudleys complete and fresh rabbit that the terriers catch and also been adding a calcium supplement to her food ,,i cant stand all the tinned food on the market cause i was told that the meat content in them is very low and it goes through your dogs quicker so ive always stuck to decent food for them,,they also have alot of leftovers from the kitchen,hope that aint a bad thing??ive also been taking her out walking on the roads cause i was told its good to strengthen her joints up a bit,,obviously she's a little young to be out working just yet,so i will just keep taking her out on fields and when i think shes ran enough i will leash her up so she dont blow herslf too young,this site is fab cause i get all the imput i need ,,cheers all

my lurcher at that age was the same he grew out of it is it when she runs mine used to run and bump into stuff ware he dint slow down fast enuff. he would put a proper show on in the field he would chace a rabbit threw a hedge and nettle come back proud as larry with the rabbit drop it at my feet then he would shake his paw ware he had been stung he would actualy sit in front of you with his paw up for me to rub it better the dopy sod

yep,,she got nettle stung the other day and yelped all night,,,,,trying not to start working her yet but her instinct is strong and shes not having any of it with me having to leash her ,,,dont want her knocking herself while shes young cause i know im going to have many years of fun out with her ,just got some white gill ferrets also so come next summer she will out with me lots,,roll on then
