SEAN3513 7
we are converting a barn........our local "batman" came out had alook round , advised to put bat holes in, and he even supplied the detailed drawings ( he works for natural england) and guess how much he charged..........................NOWT but, i agree with wilf, if you have to have it you gotta pay........it does work out at £56 an hour but he may only be doing one job a week.....so hes getting nowhere near that ( in real terms) when times where better ( last 4 years) i was earning £250 a day 6 days a week............if you have a skill you have to charge. cheers sean
AKA-BRINDLE 879
I have a small farm, sheep and some pigs, though the main money comes from building. I oversee renovations and rebuilds mainly. Anyway I have too get a bat survey done and I got a quote, he very calmly told me £300 a day and thats an 8 hour day and £60 p/hr evening and morning surveys. I put the phone down, thats 75k a year. I could make that of course though I would be on crime watch for defrauding old ladies with blocked sinks. What really gets me is they don't do anything or offer any solutions. They just fill out the liscence and count the bats then you go ahead with the work anyway. What did the bats do before this then. How long did they survive before this shower of robbing graduate tree-hugging gits turned up! Thats not all, I phoned a structural engineer mate of mine who had had a quote £90 and £86.50 AN HOUR. I know good and I mean good masons and carpenters who work a 9hr day for £120. Shocking absolute fraud. Its the way of the world...and fair play to em i say...had a 15 minute chat with a specialist vet about a dogs knee op cost me £75...makes you wish you had tried harder at school rather than pissing around dont it!?...£120 a day for a decent chippie is piss poor money over my way

macberran 2
I agree, IF you have a SKILL or the spesialised kit,...........fair dinkum. If you turn up and say ,"yes there are bats, and they fly dawn and dusk, and they roost in your roof . May I suggest that you take care when building not to disturb them if poss and heres a bit of paper too dsay its ok and thats a £1000 thanks" Then no I don,t think its on personnaly. Brings nothing too the table really at all doesn't help with ideas just has the graduate documents that through new regs allows him too do this. What did bats do before these guys came along ? Been coverting/restoring farm buildings for 25 yrs and can't see as this helps with anything. When the project is done, its just another person having their cut. If they have earned it fair enough, but over here they turn up ppoint and nod, do the ticket and stick the hand out.

Hi, I know how you feel, I went through the same process a year or so ago whilst doing a barn conversion, all the money and hassle was over a lone pipistrelle bat, the most common bat in the country. The chap that did ours was based in Suffolk, and although I cant remember the exact the price on the invoice, I do remember it made me cough! Cheers, Tom
