Coote 5
Possumpaul spends quite a bit of time away from home, so he might take a while to answer your questions. In New Zealand, a .22 magnum is legal to use for deer in some places like private land. On government land or some other places where a permit to hunt is required, generally a centrefire rifle is specified. From my own experience I would not recommend a .22 magnum as being the ultimate big game cartridge. Most people here would use something more substantial. But having said that, I have heard of deer being shot with a humble .22 LR cartridge. I have shot maybe six pigs and forty goats with a .22 LR... often using subsonic ammunition. But I would rather use something bigger. But the little .22 can certainly do the job if you are careful and don't take any marginal shots. I have hunted a lot with the good old .303 British cartridge...mostly using military ammo. Very accurate and reliable. In more recent years I have been using a Lee-Enfield (ex .303) that my late Dad converted to the AK47 cartridge, 7.62x39. My family have also used .222 Remington with good results.... and the occasional bad result. My sister in law has just got herself a Browning 7mm/08 and boy has that thing been successful. Guest baldie
I, thought long and hard about this post,But i think the last fella explained the situation fairly well. What worried me, is someone over here would copy it, and think a .22 magnum is ok for deer...it most certainly is not, yes a .22 will kill, [with a head shot] but it is illegal in the uk, and nowhere near enough gun for an animal that size. I appreciate its legal in oz, but i think we would all agree its a fox cartridge. That said, its a magnificent head, and welcome to the forum possumpaul, lets have a few better shots of that dog in the bottom of the pic, it looks very interesting mate. Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Whilst not advocating the .22 magnum for deer ,it was the calibre I was given as a young under keeper years ago and it proved its worth over and over on a wide range of stuff . Quote Link to post
