stalking prey

Recommended Posts

hi all,i have a bed/grey xwhippet/grey, had him since 8 weeks old,he is now 4yrs old, always been a goodhunter and retriever, but these last few weeks he has taken to stalking rabbits and freezing on point when he is only feet from them, when they run, sometimes he will give chase, and other times just stands and watches them run away, long ears are a different story gone like a bullet, have heard tales of collie xs doing this type of hunting,i once saw a saluki bred dog doing same thing,at at a loss as to why he has started doing this.

Seen an older Deerhound x stalk its prey years ago. The same dog used to run just out of the beam when lamping, and often took the rabbit from behind before it got a run . Was quite good to watch.

thanks for your comment donks, got to agree it is good to watch this type of hunting, had the dog out this morning, ran a couple of rabbits full bore, then ran another half heartedly, caught and retrieved a half grown one, soon after spotted along ear gone like a shot, any other members had dogs like this and what crosses were they it would be intresting to find out, thanks lads

It's not as uncommon as you'd think. Seen a few doing it mate. Think it's to do with what they prefer chasing, hares or rabbits and whether or not you've done a lot of coursing. Take fisherman who fish for trout then go for salmon, get a few salmon..... when they go back to trout, the heart ain't in it the same, how can it? But when they are trying for salmon, boy are they trying..... Same must happen to lurchers and rabbits. When a dog starts to show its losing interest it's usually a sign it's out too much or is doing to much coursing (preban) Best laying off till the hunger comes back.
