Finally gone and done it

Recommended Posts

I've put money down on a HMR barrel for my Sako Quad  Part exchange with my .22lr barrel, which I've had great fun with over the past couple of years (including stalking two foxes on it's first dead calm night and headshooting both). I figure since I'm only going to own one rimfire it should be a HMR because of it's extended range, makes more sense for the ground I shoot over.

One thing I definately won't miss are the ricochets :icon_eek:

Just need to nab a copper to start this licencing business (process is pretty much the opposite of the UK, deposit on rifle, note into cops and fill forms, wait an eternity, pay remainder and pick up new gun).

Pssshhtttt...thwap! Here I come :clapper:

i recently used a .17 HMR for the first time and was head shooting rabbits at 120 yards! awesome fun and does the job...dont think i'd trade in my .22 for it though....they are SO loud! but fair play i know loads of people that use them and love them, let us know how your first outing goes with it mate.

Id say it will suit your needs more than the little .22. Just be prepared for the jump in prices john. A friend said he paid £ 15 for 50 winchester the other day. I normally pay around 10.50-12 quid a box but compared to .22lr its expensive.

Hope you enjoy your new found calibre. 300 yard fox here you come :whistling:

Hi John

I have them both (22lr + HMR)..and a .22WMR...... and I want to hang on to them all..the HMR seems to be doing particularly well at the moment.

I think your situation may be a little different on the land front, I have loads of bits of land, some of which are just a few acres so a good gun choice is important.

The HMR is a cracking tool but I have serious problems finding a moderator to do a half decent job (still looking), the wind is NOT kind to the round despite what all the charts may say, and of course the ammo is 3 or 4 times the price of .22lr.

However, it is certainly very capable of taking head shots on bunny over 100 yards and in my view when the weather is kind it is an everyday 150 yard tool. In the right hands on the right day it "may" be considered a 200 yard tool. Certainly at Bisley it is Bulls and V Bulls all day at 200 yards...but that isn't in the field!!

ATB!!

From the little I know of your land John I suspect the HMR will prove useful.

Just back from and early morning shoot and took 18 bunnies with the HMR out to 161 yards. Only 3 or 4 less than 100 yards. It was still and flat where I was, but lots of drizzle, almost all the shots prone and off the bipod (that's why I got soaked) but the bunnies just kept falling down!

use a SAK mod, will transform the rifle - makes it ALOT quieter , but you still have the supersonic crack obviously

nice round the .17HMR good luck ATB JRC

I got an ASE ULTRA moderator for mine,my local gun dealer said he tested quite a few mods on the range with some type off machine for noise levels and it came out tops,i think i paid 120 euros for it,as said above you still have the supersonic crack
