Rabbit Snaring Questions

Recommended Posts

Total noob questions

1. Do the snares kill the rabbits or do I do that when I go back?

2. Best time to set them? dusk till dawn, or dawn till dusk?

3. How high from the ground should the snares be?

4. What non targetted animals am I likely to catch/hurt?

5. Where sells snares? I've seen a few sites but can't remember them(I dont want to make my own).

Thanks.

1. If your fence snaring and theres a situation were the animal can get entangled, which there is most are killed when you check them in the morning, although its not always the case and you do have a few alive still... With peg snares, its a case of 50/50 some are dead next day, others will be sat tight, trying not to be seen...

2.This time of year your going to have to check them morning and night, as the rabbits are active most of the day, afternoon and night..

3. Pegs Snares anywhere from 6" - 9" , dependant on length of grass, etc on run.. I recently caught a rabbit in a fox snare set at 10" to the bottom of the loop, so just goes to show....

4. What could you catch non target, if set in wrong place ... squirrel, pheasant, hare, fox cub, cat same in peg snares although a deer could place its foot through, so be very cautious of were your setting, especially in woodland environments with deer about..

5. Snares, just from personal experience if your going to buy them and not make your own, send woodga a pm on the site...

Theres information on the site Glenns wrote on rabbit snaring, which is very good, also colins DVD is great and shows you how to make your own snares easily... To be honest were lucky to have the likes of woodga, pegandgun and glenn on the site, as they have a great amount of practical experience, gained over many years of snaring...

well if you get none then dont be down-hearted. i didnt get any on my first time out. it takes time and learning but eventually you will get there. and if there are rabbits in the area, and you have set your snares correctly, then why shouldent you get any?

It's infested with rabbits, I've put them on the runs that look well used, they had fresh droppings, so hopfully there should be some.

Ok I'm back.

I did get one!

Only one rabbit, but I set the snares at 12.30 and whent back at 6pm so They were not down long, I'm going to set them tommorow at about 4pm and leave them over night, So I'll let you all know how I get on.

None of the snares other than the caught one seemed to of been looked at, none had been moved, pushed etc.

one is better than none! 6pm seems a little early which is probs the reason you only got one. get a pic up if possible, display to THL that you have your first sanred rabbit! :clapper: well done.
