skycat 6,173
I would definitely not take a runt: but what are you calling the runt? Is it just a pup that is smaller than the rest? But OK proportions and health etc. A true runt usually looks malnourished, often has a head that seems disproportionately large for its body, is sometimes bug eyed and pot bellied as if it is carrying worms. Good litters well reared and with the bitch well fed and cared for shouldn't even have a runt amongst the pups. A true runt will be only half the size, or less, than the other pups when it is born, which is completely different to a small pup. Lurchers often have very mixed sizes in a litter due to their mixed breeding: especially when you have very small breeds mixed with very big breeds.

Guest sph1979
The Runt (smallest) pup is the one i go for as they must have alot of guts and determination to fend off the rest of the litter to get to the food. I have a litter now (all homed) and i the smallest pup is clever, she's always at the bottom of the pile (the warmest) and she always takes her food away from the others. I would never choose the biggets but thats just me. As for the coat being patchy, is it realy patchy with fleas or has the bitch been dragged down by the pups. If th runt is unwell stay clear, saying that if any pup is unwell stay clear of the litter. Pups should be strong and healthy
