runforyourlife 361
People keep mentioning road walk fittness...Well surely that is just a natural thing for us and the dog. I would imagine you dont plan road walking exercises, you just get the dogs on the leads when ever your walkng anywhere, to the shop to friends, walking to the fields etc... My dogs do quite alot of miles road walking without even thinking about it....Or does evryone not take there dogs out with them on normal excursions? Quote Link to post

I wouldnt plan a route on roads, i would just go for a walk, maybe i should take my ski sticks and rucksac and ordinance survey map as well... What i am saying is, its not a planned training exercise is it, like finding some good stubble or water, and getting a retrieve. It s just normal to walk say from one town to another i would have thought. I am going to go to the bank this morning, i will naturally get my dogs on there leads and walk the cpl of mile to the bank, it wouldnt be a planned exercise, just a normal run of the mill thing in my everyday life... Guest anonymous
i no this might sound daft to some folk but how do you no when a dog is fully fit?or at its fittest? It isn't a stupid question mate and I notice you never got a response............ You could be as scientific as you want with weighing food, how much exercise, finding out what suits your dog the best etc, but that's the problem. Just like you and me, dogs are all different, each having different levels of fitness. Some folk look at a well muscled dog and think, theres a fit dog. To an extent it probably is but a running dog needs stamina and you can't look at a dog and see stamina. Same with humans, most people who have stamina are thin not well built, take your marathon runners compared to your sprinters. Take your Saluki compared to a greyhound. Now, a lurcher needs a good measure of both and this is where the shit hits the fan or it comes off spectaculary good..... seperates the wheat from the chaff so to speak but I digress........ Best way to get a dog fit in my experience is to work it, work it, work it.... Now, you can't do that in the summer but it is easier to maintain fitness rather than to build it so lots of walks and if you have 2 dogs, let them chase one another. Get a plastic bottle and throw it, doesn't take long before a chase happens...They ain't going to run as fast as they would after quarry but they will still maintain a good level of fitness. Come the new season, your dogs won't take long to get back up to speed. Anyhow, if it's just rabbits your after, an unfit dog will still give you several chases so the emphasis on having a dog in peak fitness isn't as necessary compared to the energy zapping chases on the mighty warrior of old............. Well said, must agree.. You may still be able to work your dog through the summer if you have the permission but on the whole running is best. And my dogs love plastic bottles! always seem to find one. It is hard to know a saluki x dog is fully fit because you can never see there stamia levels till the heat is actually on/.. Yes I know you don't plan to walk your dogs but as I said, I do and I know people that this is all they do... You don't need a map etc but the difference is, your going somewhere i.e the bank, whereas I'll grab the leads, take the dogs a walk and this is the only thing I'm doing, i.e walking the dogs. I ain't going to a bank, seeing friends, walking from one village to another for a paper, I'm soley planning to walk the dogs. I'll also take the dogs to the shops etc but when I'm bored with the telly or I'm wanting to put some extra miles in with the lads, I'll just take them a long walk for a couple of hours. You find if you are only walking the dogs, your in a better frame of mind and keep up a better pace. I know people who use a bike soley to walk their dogs as well.... f**k I know some weird c**ts........... wonder if it's just me..... Quote Link to post
