Hi everyone a friend of mine shoots a tikka 3 in 223 and is having problems and asked if i could air the problem on the forum as i told him i felt sure someone could help him.He as had his rifle screw cut for a moderator it is a heavy barrelled varminter im told,it shoots fine without a mod on giving 1"groups at 100yds but with a mod only 3"groupings are possible, hes tried it clean and unclean, different ammo ,at the moment he shoots sako ammo, hes tried jet and reflex mods and he assures me that the mod is sitting true on the barrel and the mod shows no signs of the bullets catching the sides of it when fired.with all other ammo they shoot fine till mod is attached, hope someone can help, many thanks

There is probarbly a fault with the screwcutting, has it been recrowned properly?Group size will alter position, but should not get bigger with a mod on. If he has tried 2 different moderators, it has to be the threading job, or crown.

Am I correct in assuming one of these mods is a T4/8 ............If i am correct then I went through exactly the same thing when a T8 was fitted to my .223 m595 and i can say it's very demoralising after spending nearly £300 .

I cured it by doing the following ......

The extra weight caused the floating barrel to touch the stock ,you might think it's still free floating with the mod fitted but once fired the harmonics can cause the barrel to hit the stock creating stock hammer ............for shooting off a bi-pod it's surprising how much material has to be removed to alleviate this ,I have 1/8" clearence(Yes it is OTT) ...........although at the time I was'nt aware of how lubricating the baffles of a T8 can cause eratic grouping on the first couple of shots as well .

A DIY way of repairing a crown is using a marble and some abrasive paste or fine grade paper

If you get it to a good rifle smith, he will sort it out. ;)

Id say Baldie is not far off, but a good rifle smith will know when he looks at it.

Frank.

You cheeky bugger, i am a riflesmith :D:D Dead ive has probarbly hit the nail on the head, i should have read the post properly and realised it was a big mod. Easy test, grasp the rifle by the pistol grip, and with your other hand, slap the underside of the stock, if it needs floating, you will feel the wood knock against the action.

:laugh::laugh: ..........What you trying to say frank  ...........Yep that's a good way to find out baldie ;)

Makes you wander how the SMLE (short mag lee enfield ) was renown for accuracy and still is even though it had a barrel band clamping it to a wooden stock
