how do i get into pest control???

Recommended Posts

I have just got into the idea of becoming a professional pest controller. I have recently bought an air rifle and already have a very good working terrier. I just don’t know where do go next, do I go onto collage? (Yawn) or start advertising to local farmers, magazines, papers? Etc. I am going to take delivery of some ferrets and a polecat soon. Any sound and genuine advice will be welcome.

Thanks ;)

Beings pest controll is a big topic, what type of pest control would you want to do? If you want to do all areas of pest control, i would of thought College or an apprenticeship woulb be your best option. You need to get a reasonable amount of knowledge under your belt about pest control before you can get a job in it.

Im thinking, mainly rural pest control e.g. rabbits, foxes, mink, hares etc. I have experience in using terriers and consider myself a good shot. it just a matter of widening my horizons and making a bit of money on the way. Ive had a looke look around and noticed in my area there is no businesses situated so I think there might be a opportunity there.

Well...now I think about it. And I like the fact you think you are some kind of rural messiah: D. anyway I have permission on the farm where my dad works and where I currently live and he himself (the owner) said there is a huge pest problem with deer fox and rabbits and there isn’t much good reliable pest controllers just young wannabes ...oh:icon_redface: . Anyway... if it means moving to where the work is that doesn’t bother me.

Around my area it's only the elder generation who get hired for rural Pest Control, as they generally have more of an idea and more experience. But i think it would be hard for you to make a living out of it unless you knew the right people or have had alot of experience. The pest controler who i go out lamping with some nights went to Moulton College and gained an honours degree in Agriculture and Land Management, and then worked as a Game Keeper for many years and then created his own Pest Control business, but there are many different ways of getting into Pest Control. Go to your local Connexions and they will help you get a job in Pest Control or a college placement.
