Where do all the bucks go this time of year

Recommended Posts

They are harder to spot out feeding at this time of year more than any other time. Having said that I don't believe they go anywhere, they are just in cover and aren't out for long.

We shot a buck in the middle of a 40 acre field this morning at 04:15 just after it had been tipping down with rain for 15 minutes. He had finished feeding and was starting to move back in to cover, another 5 minutes and we would have missed him. In the next field over we saw another buck with 2 young does, they went in early too. After 04:30 there was nothing to be seen anywhere.

I am going up to my syndicate ground this weekend (11th-13th July) near Dumfries. I'm worried I might be wasting my time and money if the buck's aren't showing at the minute! Do you think this is to early for the rut to start up there? Last year I was too late and missed it!

Ive seen one or two Roe clap really tight in hay/silage fields in my time to the point they could be walked straight past without being noticed if they hadnt already been seen. Excuse the pun but maybe there getting the drop on you foxdropper and hiding before you see them :11:

used to be in a syndicate up there for 4 years rut seemed to usually start 7 days after it starts here.I think were 10 14 days off.

best time i found up there was 1st week in august, good luck with the midges.

Thanks for that John! I can't stop itching since you mentioned midges! But it's ok, i've got a bottle of 'Skin So Soft'! ;)

We were watching a Doe and Fawn graze when a Buck appeared down wind and the Doe was out of sight. When he spotted her he chased her around the hill in and out of cover for about 15 mins she was "peeping" and

I have seen bucks chasing does but this chase like yours was the buck chasing the doe not FOLLOWING her remember she usually runs and he follows, also the does usually ditch the fawns. she could have been calling back to the fawn. who knows you were there i was,nt just do,nt think its rutting behaviour.also some of your text is missing?

For me a good sign of a rut is not a doe with a kid that's not the norm they would have been left long way off some times for days during the rut the doe will peep when the buck is in .But this time of year will have good results when calling because most times it is the doe we call. The sad old buck will only follow to his death . :clapper:

and because the guy next to me who culls deer for a living for the last 20 years + shoots 300 Roe per year said "the rut has started" ;););)

That is good news barry j  and well done on taking those two bucks!

Whether the rut has or has not yet started, it is good to hear that not all of the bucks have disappeared!

I watched a mature buck chasing a single mature Doe for about 20 minutes, up and down a winter wheat field. They were all over the place, made me dizzy watching them. Doesn't mean the rut was on though, it was the third week in May!!!
