Annmarie09 5
I feed my pup James Wellbeloved junior, ok it's not cheap but v good product, no wheat etc, I add raw eggs, fish and chicken only in small amounts once per day to the kibble. I fed my first lurcher pup on racing greyhound food til he was 2 and he did pretty well on it, he was a mess when I got him at 5 months though.
skycat 6,174
Cheap food equals rubbish food: check the ingredients on the side of the bags. If the first ingredient listed is cereals then there's not much meat in the food. Dogs do far better on food which is mainly meat, and I know that thousands of dogs live happily for years on rubbish food but I really notice the difference if I compare my dogs with dogs that are fed cereal based commercially prepared food. If you only have one or two dogs then you only need a small freezer to store their meat and there's lots of outfits that deliver BARF (raw food) nowadays and it doesn't work out any more expensive than dry food: the dogs like raw food better, it does them more good and you won't be clearing up so much sh*t either as there's so little wastage when they are on raw. There's a million more reasons to feed raw: google BARF and have a read!

skycat 6,174
Do you havea local friendly butcher? Ours gives us all his stripped chicken carcases: wings, legs and breast taken off. Also lamb trimmings. All you need to remember is not to feed large animal leg bones: weight bearing bones, pork skin is also pretty undigestable, and if you feed too many bones of any sort your dog will get constipated and crap dry white golf balls for turds which can be pretty uncomfortable for the dog. For young and growing dogs I reccomend about half red meat, 1/4 chicken wings or carcase and a small (couple of ribs) chunk of breast of lamb. But don't forget to vary the meat content, add 2000gm of raw liver twice a week, oily fish (sardines which can be tinned are a good source), and any left over veg from your own plate and better still raw pureed veg. Dosen't hurt to add a teaspoonful of a good Vitamin and Mineral supplement such as SA37. How much to feed? Use your eyes and hands to tell you if the dog is underweight or over weight and if the dog is just right then feed it as much as it will eat at one sitting.
