CommanderData 0
vet told me that some get it some dont ... Obviously a very profound thinker your vet. Did (s)he do any test to confirm that it was distemper, or was it just a guess? Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
I dont know how distempter is caught or transmitted...So apologies for technical innacuracy. But I would be really nervous taking new ferrets in to the same area, so soon after loosing others. It may be wise to ask the vet for his advice? Can it be transmitted in the air? Was is feline or cannine distemper, are there wild/ferral/neighbours cats in the which will reinfect the newcommers?? Just be really careful, it would be a shame to loose some more. Or can yo keep them at a freinds house until you are satisfied that it is safe to bring them home? Just airing my thoughts.. Quote Link to post
Mistyka 0
Is this a confirmed case? I have rang around to all the vets in the Darlington area and Bishop, Crook and Durham and they haven't seen a case of distemper in quite some time. If there was an outbreak, with having a rescue, I would obviously want to shut my doors for a period of time. Quote Link to post
The one 8,470
Think if it was me i would be burning my hutches and starting from scratch again just to be sure Quote Link to post
Guest shadowz
Could you please let us know what vet you have been to ? Any case of distemper is serious especially to people running rescues in your area. If the vet has diagnosed distemper then it would be good to get a warning sent out to rescues and other ferret owners in the area thru them. I think all vets in darlington and the whole of co. Durham has been contacted but without any of them knowing about ferrets with distemper. Edited July 7, 2009 by shadowz Quote Link to post
coursing mad 5
she just guessed that they had distemper but she said she would ring me today when she had done further tests and she said it seems to be staggers sorry to worry you all but when she told me it was distemper i imeidietly put it up to warn people because it is very dangerous thanks. tom!! droid 11
Isn't 'staggers' magnesiun deficiency? If it is, I'm pretty sure it can be cured by an injection. And if that's the case, if you'd got the ferrets to the vets promptly they needn't have died. There's a lot of 'ifs' there because it's 30-odd years since I came across 'staggers'......
