sandymere 8,263
They're on the whole an effective medication that in the main have few side effects, at least in compared to a heart attack, and are not prescribed lightly so it's interesting to see that there is good compliance. There seems to be a growing mistrust to scientific medicine and a move towards all the unproven hippy trippy stuff theses days, it reminds me of the Life of Brian and sketch "what have the Romans done for us?" just change Romans for science/medicine. Some people are prone to high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure, diabetes etc but sensible diet and exercise will help to reduce reliance on medication or hold back the need for a few years. The most important thing is early diagnosis to prevent the damage that these can cause.
gnasher16 30,279
My brother was on statins for a few years aswel as a few other tablets but for some reason decided not to stop taking them all. He died last year at the age of 57 from a heart attack while in his sleep . while he stayed on the staitins he had it all under control but quite litteraly took him own life in his own hands, the doctor told us afterwards he warned him to keep taking the dose requied but he never listened..... sorry to put a Dampener on things men but when I saw this topic it reminded me all over again... Jasper Sorry for your loss Jasp, no apology needed apart from maybe me, for the untimely reminder. You have however given a harsh warning to justify that most of us are on them for a very good reason. Al. Certainly does make you put things in perspective...can only speak for myself but ive only ever been on them because im a long time bodybuilder and during the off season the old cholestorol can very quickly go through the roof which in turn often takes blood pressure with it.....so can i justify being on them for a very good reason,no not really as nobody is forced into the sports or hobbies they choose.....however my justification is that nobody forces anyone to have a big fried breakfast everyday or to eat unhealthily in general......we all make our own choices and pay for it in the long run. Doesnt make the blow of losing family prematurely any easier and of course some people do their very best to live healthily and still lose out some folk are lucky and some aint unfortunately. It gets alot easier with time but now and again it crashes its way back into your mind rattling the old memory banks. he was a good 22 stone at the time and had problems with his cholestorol and other underlying problems for a good few years! the tablets had it all in check but John liked his drink but didn't like the tablets which was his final downfall. he was one man who would sit and listen to all my problems but never burden me with his so as expected much missed..... cholestorol is probably something I need to get checked out now I'm reaching the old fogie stage like yourself Jasp
