I think your wrong mate a good nose is essential but its still not going to make a terrier fly to ground and stay with its quarry, all im saying is I think its better for a young dog to be brought out on a few digs with a good working terrier for the experience.

Look lads each to thier own, i have never expected anything other than self entering .

Every young dog of mine gets to see fresh corpses whilst young, every time you come back in from digging your pups will smell the fresh scent on your other dogs and on your self...hands clothes and such. If the dogs are bred right then the working instinct should come out, at nine to ten months old i start to walk over earths with my pups on the leads and by the end of the day they are usualy marking or at least getting interested in the scent of the earth - sett.

The rest is up to them and god.

its a shame to read how hard it is to get true genuin WORKING TERRIERS to think the ole spade was push to the back of the shed and them horrable thin rope leads took its place.the swet from the show ring must of been more satterfieing then the swet of the spade

im not one to hold a terrier back until its 18mth-2yr old.call me impatient but if any terrier aint running through/searching an earth and showing interest by the time its a year old i usually cut my losses and get rid.ive yet to have a problem getting a terrier to go to ground(if owned from a young age),whether it will work to your/my own standard is a different matter, you cant make anything that has a pulse do what it doesnt want to.its how the pup is bought on.however,i rarely take a youngster out to tie up and watch another terrier work an earth too often as i hate to hear/watch a terrier teathered up screaming its head of.if it wants in on the action and is matture enough to cope then i to would let it self enter, alone and not with another terrier.

7 months, theyre still babies! i have my pups running through drains, earths, bales etc from a very young age but wouldnt allow them to enter an occupied place until 10mth at the earliest.

A lot of potentially good dogs have been ruined by premature entering. These dogs end up passed from pillar to post-"doing a bit" as they are usually described to the next buyer.

real top class working dogs do not get advertised very often-they are usually snapped up by friends etc. very few people i know would part with a GOOD dog anyway.

get a pup from good breeding and enter it yourself is the best way. if you cant train and enter a dog then get yourself some golf clubs .
