Hi,

I spent a long time looking for a descent knife.

I started off playing with the big ones like something Crocodile Dundee would jump around with but after trying to skin my first rabbit with it I got over the macho-ness and looked for something a little more practical for allround outdoor pursuits.

Tried my hand at a few lock backs, the trusted Swiss army and even the Tom Brown Tracker (as seen in The Hunted).

Im currently using the Sog Seal Pup. Its a tough little bugger and keeps its edge pretty well.

Its about the same size as your standard Ray Mears type knife but it was a fraction of the cost. I think I got mine for about £20 but ive had it a while so dont quote me on that.

Theres only two niggly things about it worth mentioning.

First was the kydex sheath it came with... it was a bit too "Action Man" for my liking and it was a bit noisy if you were trying to be sneaky.

I picked up a nice little sheath on ebay so that sorted that problem.

The other problem is that there is a serrated section near the hilt of the cutting edge.

Why? ... I do not know. Its no use as a saw as the blade is too short and I keep my blade razor sharp so its of no real benefit for cutting.

The knife is basically a smaller version of the Sog Seal which I think has a blade about 9 inches long, so the teeth probably benefit the larger knife more than this smaller version.

Ive kept the teeth on it but purely because I can avoid them in day to day use and they may come in good for something in the future. You could easily get rid of them at a sharpening and work the edge a bit longer.

Its robust enough for larger projects and it can skin a rabbit without any hassle.

Hope this helps you out.

i broke the top of my fixed blade knife yesterday and I need a replacement, any one got any idea where best to buy a decent hard wearing knife, big enough for deer, rabbit etc.A general all round tough blade.Ive looked in town but nothing of real quality.Anyone make knives to order in Ireland?

Have you considdered making one of your own bud ??

Get your hands on an old circular saw blade that you think is decent steel and give it a go. Its a great sense of achivement to use a knife that you have made yourself, no matter how "rustic" it turns out.

Guest Scuba1

I am making one at the moment after i have finished with my weather stations. Well I will make two out of an old saw blade.

The rough shaping is done and its hardened so I have a bit more grinding and sanding to do but its getting there. Try it, its fun and you end up with a knife in the shape and size you want.

Ive always fancied having a go at making my own knife.

Might be a little project for the more miserable days in the winter when I cant be bothered going out much :hmm:

If / when I do it I will be sure to post a few pics somewhere on the forum like "Scuba1" did.

Jig you wont go wrong with a frost clipper pal, cheap as chips and very very good........they are about £7 each!!!

They will take an edge again and again and at £7 you dont give a monkeys if you loose it........they sound exactly the same as the green handled jobby that grant mentioned maybe someone just charged £28 for it!!

+1 for that.

I've used these knives before, good stuff.
