macem , i have thought about geting into bow shooting can you recomend the best way to go about it and what sort of set up would be best for a complete novice

Foxshot,choosing a bowhunting setup is a very,very personal thing,bit like choosing a woman,dog,house or car,whats right for me is probably not right for you.For any tyro my best advice as always is get along to your local archery shop or club and test a variety of weapons.

Ask someone in the know to measure your up for draw weight and length,then the choice is yours for axle-to-axle length,brace height,single,double,or cam-and-a-half,and all this before you hit the minefield of accessories like release-aids,quivers,rests,stabilizers,silencers etc

Long bows, recurves and compounds all will get the job done quite well. I haven't heard of a polar bear hunt costing that much and do have friends and a brother who go on trips like that. They're a lot but I believe half the quoted cost should get'r done.

 

Your right. Them heads are killers. They cause massive, rapid blood loss which quickly kills the animal.

 

I see you guys are interested in Chuck Adams a good author and hunter. Here's one I believe Chuck cut his bow hunting teeth on and kind of has ties to you guys, Howard Hill. One of his books "Hunting the Hard Way" is an excellent read for any bow hunter especially the long bow hunter. He played the part of Robin Hood on TV when I was a boy. It is a great read as well.
