i have just recieved an answer from the police for concerned ....

THIS IS WHAT I WROTE TO THEM ..........

i am absolutely appauled that a qualified police dog handler could be

so negligent as to allow 2 dogs to die in such a horific way. as a qualified dog

handler myself i cannot begine to think why he would have left these dogs in a

closed vehicle for any lengh of time in the current climate let alone long

enough for it to cause their deaths. even your average member of the public who

is new to keeping dogs knows about the dangers of keeping dogs in a car in this

extreme heat. i hope that the officer concerned is removed from the dog section

and is never allowed to keep a dog again.

AND THIS WAS THEIR RESPONSE ...........

Thank you for contacting Nottinghamshire Police to express your concerns about

the death of our two police dogs on Tuesday 30 June.

The incident has caused immense shock and sadness throughout the force. I can

assure you that we take this matter very seriously and the actions of the force

and the individual will be thoroughly investigated.

We reported the death of two German shepherd police dogs to the RSPCA, who are

now conducting the inquiry. The welfare of our animals is a major concern to us

and we are working closely with the RSPCA to establish what happened. We also

informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) who have since

decided the incident should be investigated internally by Nottinghamshire

Police.

In due course a report will also be given to the Nottinghamshire Police

Authority, who have a duty to scrutinise the work of the force and hold the

Chief Constable to account.

The bond and the love between the trainers, handlers and the dogs is absolutely

outstanding. The dog unit and the individual concerned are absolutely devastated

by what has happened and we can only imagine what they are going through after

losing two of their own team.

You may be interested to know that Nottinghamshire Police has its own Animal

Welfare Lay Visitors Scheme. This is a group of dedicated members of the public

who ensure that our animal welfare is of the highest standards. They are

overseen by the police authority and will be included in our internal

investigation.

Any updates on this incident will be published in the near future

Once again thank you for contacting us.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us

again.

Dog death Pc 'too ill' for court

_46000543_nottspolice_raw.jpg The dogs died at the police headquarters at Sherwood Lodge A police dog handler accused of leaving two of his German Shepherds to die in his car was "too ill" to attend his first court hearing in Nottingham.

Pc Mark Johnson faces one charge of causing unnecessary suffering after he allegedly left the police dogs in the back of his car on 30 June.

The 40-year-old did not attend the short hearing in Nottingham earlier.

The deaths happened on one of the hottest days of the year, when temperatures reached 29.3C (84.7F).

Mr Johnson was represented at Nottingham Magistrates' Court by his solicitor and a member of the Police Federation.

The defendant is accused of leaving his dogs, 10-year-old Jet and 18-month-old Jay-Jay, to die after he went in to Nottinghamshire Police's headquarters in Arnold.

The prosecution is being brought by the RSPCA, which accuses Mr Johnson of "unnecessarily confining them [his dogs] in an environment that was detrimental to their well-being".

It is understood that Jet came third at last year's National Police Dog Championship and Jay-Jay was being trained to replace the older dog.

HANDLER MAY BE LET OFF FOR POLICE DOGS THAT BAKED TO DEATH IN CAR 126228_1.jpg

Police mourned the tragic death of the dogs

Thursday September 10,2009

A POLICE dog handler whose two alsatians died in his car during a heatwave may never stand trial.

PC Mark Johnson was due to make a first appearance before magistrates yesterday but was not well enough to attend court.

He is accused of causing unnecessary suffering to the animals for which he could face up to six months in jail.

The 40-year-old officer is believed to be suffering from stress. Magistrates at Nottingham were handed a doctor's certificate stating that he was unfit to attend.

During a 10-minute hearing, PC Johnson's solicitor Mr Damian Kelly told the court: "The defence will be obtaining a psychiatric report regarding his fitness to plead."

The dogs – Jet, 10, and 18-month-old Jay-Jay – were left unattended in the officer's car outside Nottinghamshire police HQ in June as temperatures outside reached 83F (28C).

Mr Kelly also made a successful application in private to District Judge Morris Cooper for a ban on publishing details of PC Johnson's address.

Nottingham Chief Constable Julia Hodson revealed previously she had been inundated by an angry public response to the deaths of the dogs.

"We have had a lot of emails, telephone calls and letters from members of the public, most of whom want the officer involved dealt with most harshly," she said.

Judge Cooper told yesterday's hearing: "I am satisfied that there are substantial grounds that the admin- istration of justice would be likely to be severely prejudiced if Mr Johnson's address be published." He adjourned the case until next month. PC Johnson is one of the country's top police dog handlers and Jet was admired as one of the UK's most accomplished police dogs.

Jet was due to retire from routine police work, but was to be retrained to sniff out weapons while Jay-Jay was being trained to replace him in frontline duties. Despite his age Jet finished third in the 2007 National Police Dog Championships.

After the incident, PC Johnson was given home leave and suspended. If convicted he could be jailed for six months and fined up to £20,000.

The prosecution is being brought by the RSPCA, which accuses PC Johnson of confining the dogs in an environment detrimental to their well-being.

Seriously though, it's shamefull, imagine what would happen to one of us, and the publicity we'd get if a working terrier or lurcher suffered the same apphaling death......... then you wouldn't want to bet one of your spuds on that one Simoman... let me tell you!

Regular daily checks are needed before performing your dutys. Dog vans should always be checked to see the air con fans are working. Seems like they wernt working, or they could of been and faulted during his duty.

He will not be sacked from his job, the worst if at the handlers fault be taken off the dog unit, however i cannot see this happening.

Its a great shame for any dog to die in these circumstances, the handler must be devestated too!!

The force will miss them.

Oh great he kills his dogs through stupidity then is off work with pay due to stress.

Then as we all expect the whole sorry matter will be swept under the carpet.

Do you sometimes feel as if public opinion means nothing anymore and we all have our lives run by a small left wing elite.

With the shit we have had to swallow in recent years, we should be marching in London on a weekly basis or even conducting complete civil disobedience.
