A knife with a blade of 3" or less and which is capable of permanently folding is legal to be carried by anyone, although a reason will be expected.

Blades over three inches and those which have some sort of locking mechanism, are still legal though you would be expected to provide a good reason for carrying it in a public place to avoid the charge of Possession of an offensive weapon.

If say you have a 4" lock knife on you, your dressed in wellingtons and a camouflage jacket with a Lurcher and a dead rabbit or two, is reasonable excuse to suspect you've been out hunting.

If you are pulled carrying either a blade over 3" or a lock knife (any length) then you would have to prove you had a lawful reason for carrying it.

After discussing this with the local police sargent (who also shoots) who said if you could prove where you were legally hunting (written permission) and traveling home from there (not going in the opposite direction) Then in his opinion common sense should prevail and no action should be taken.

But if you could not produce evidence that you were legally hunting or had any other good reason for carrying the knife it would automatically be classed as carrying an offensive weapon. (best case: Knife confiscated. worst case:prosecuted)

After that I will now only carry a blade less than 3" as I often forget to take them out of my pockets. (slashers and bill hooks used for clearing undergrowth when ferreting also come under the same legislation)

Hope this helps

Bloody hell, I did not have a clue that the laws were like that here. I always carry my white hunter when I am out, so I think I am in the market for a new knife then. Does it have to be a folding knife?

The Criminal Justice Act (1988) says that you may carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding. That means no fixed blade knives. But, think about it - a knife has no place at a football match, in a pub, nightclub or school and becomes an offensive weapon in these circumstances in just the same way as a screwdriver, or any other innanimate tool.

But I NEED a Bigger Knife ...

If you wish to carry a larger knife then you must have 'reasonable cause'. That means that you must be able to prove that you had a genuine reason for carrying the knife.

You may carry a larger cutting tool if it is associated with your work (for instance a chef may carry a 9.0" butchers knife roll to and from work), or if it is associated with your sport, (for instance a fisherman may carry a 6.0" fillet knife, or a hunter may carry a 6.0" fixed blade hunting knife).

Don't forget it's there though. If you stop off in Tesco's for a can of beans on your way home take the knife off of your belt and lock it in your glove box, or your local Bobby will be unimpressed at your excuses. When transporting a knife by car keep it locked away in the glove box or securely stored in the boot of the vehicle. Do not slip it into the door side-pocket, under your seat or in a centre console, this is a dangerous practice, and if stopped by the Police this gives the impression of keeping the knife close to hand.

Don't Give The Police A Hard Time ...

Ensure that you comply fully with the law. The Police take breaches of knife law very seriously, you really don't want to be caught on the wrong side, it's just not worth it.

Its just over 5 inches and fixed blade. I love it and had it for over 30 years. It must be on it 4th sheath by now but one can still order them from Puma.

I would find that a bit difficult. Having to skin wabbits with a plastic party spoon or some such thing.
