Steve Albano 21
Red Dog, thanks for posting a picture of the Trapline mole traps I manufacture here in California, and thanks for clarifying that this was just "the one that almost got away", and that non-lethal catches with the trap are not common. The distance between the jaws and trigger is set so that the trap almost always catches the moles with a lethal hold on the chest, but as with other traps, there is the odd exception here and there due to moles moving the trap out of position or tripping it by pushing dirt against the trigger. But we get about 90% good clean chest catches, as shown in the picture below. Disadvantages of the trap are that its unidirectional, so you have to set two traps per set, which means twice as many traps Advantages are that you can catch two moles at a catch, which you can do with a duffus, but not with a Talpex. Other advantages are that the traps are very small and light weight(about 1.5 ounces per trap), so you can carry 50 or 100 traps in a bucket with no problem. Also the trap is all stainless steel, so it lasts and the trigger sensitivity won't decrease due to rust. And because the set trap actually slides into the mole run, the moles trip the trap directly as they come through their intact tunnel. They don't have to dig their way through an artificial blockage like on a Talpex set, and they don't have to come into a disturbed area of tunnel, as with a Duffus set. The traps work great in clay or muddy soil, but less well in very sandy conditions, where there's a higher tendency for moles to dig around or under the traps. If the soil will hold an intact tunnel well, the traps work well. Quote Link to post
camies 1
Recently purchased half a dozen of Steve Albano's mole traps. Score so far is 1 mole trapped cleanly & one across the 'waist'. dead easy to set and place and so far(touching wood) no trapped fingers. Not much good in sandy soil where Talpex stills rule supreme. One one tiny point, needed to atach tethers to each trap as they don't come fitted and as the traps are VERY light, they definetely need to be pinned down. Quote Link to post
