you mite want to read up on a barf site plenty of free info just to get it right as its inportant to feed correctly to stop and growth problems.chicken wings are the best to feed with the bone hole as they are the softest being non wait bearing bones but if you get carcases minced hole that helps with initial feeding as to build up stomach acids and has the obviouse benefits with proteins minerals vitamins fats and calcium, plenty of meat still on a chickens back and fatty skin.feeding vegies i find is good with green minced tripe after all its natural thats how carnivors get it in the wild by eating the gut and stomach.meat and meal definatly break down in the gut at different rates so not a good idea to combine,i could litterally go on for ever about this diet but do your self a favour look well in to flesh feeding a good site is barf for beginers tells you all at no cost what to put with what how much and ratios, good luck.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey up fella's right it's me again, if I feed her rabbit am I better off giving her 1/3rd of a rabbit.....ye know with fur on and left whole but cut into 3 pieces, head / shoulders, mid section and back end ? Im just not sure on the fur, if were going back to what her ancestors did in the wild then surely I'd be better off leaving it on ? what about the gutsm anal tract with all the yet to be deposited todds ? sorry but I honestly dont know what todo

your advice as usual is greatly appreciated

Craig.

Everyone feeds rabbits differently, i personally give mine the whole thing, that said mine will only eat them freshly caught. Some prefer to feed skinned and gutted, some freeze them for 3 weeks to kill worm cysts.

If it was me starting a pup on them i'd gut them, and feed half a whole rabbit as 1 meal, leaving fur on.

I freeze them first to kill off worms then feed them whole ie skin etc all intact. I sometimes cut them up into a pup size portion for a pup but I often just let a pup eat whatever it wants and then just let one of the adults finish the rest; they're not fussy.

Hi Hannah and Neil, thanks for your advice.......OMG.......now I am worried, I had a look yesterday at your threads and I thought I'd introduce her to a rabbit for the first time, here's the worrying part.......she ran and hid, wouldnt have anything todo with it at all, the look of terror in her eyes, I dont know if she thought i'd just killed her sisiter or something, but really concerned me...is this what the anti Hancocks are talking about with his dogs ? I expected her to be desparate to get hold of it, like Lora was, please give me your advice,

a very concerned Craig

If the dog is nine weeks old its still a puppy so let it be one. Try taking a back leg off the rabbit with the fur off to start with and give it to your pup to eat. She will get the smell and then she wont run away. If you rush your pup you will ruin her. My pupshave been eating meat since they were 2 1/2 weeks old ot of the mothers dish.

Hi SPH, thanks for your brilliant advice, du think this is normal behaviour then for a 13 Wk old pup ?, I did exactly what you suggested, Ive gutted, skinned and cut into usual pieces, and popped it all into the freezer so to kill off any worm cyst's, Im just a lil bit ott with her as I want her to have the best chance.

new to the barf scene for feeding dogs , whats the best way to start feeding pups on them as young as 3 weeks old? would you suggest feed once daily then 2 times a soaked puppy dry food? OR minced chicken , ect mixed in with the soaked puppy food? as suggested feeding is 3 times a day for weaning pups .

Don't worry Sully, I've had similar experiences but if you open the carcase up, as somebody said above, the smell should encourage the pup. One of my kelpie bitches goes through phases of refusing to eat rabbit but she's one of those sensitive types and it's usually at the start of the season so I think she's just trying to say, "it's OK you can trust me: I promise I won't eat it!"

When you skin a rabbit try and make a game with a bit of fur i'd throw it for the pup a few times. Dont worry im here to help lol try the dog on the liver of the rabbit or the kidney. ( my fav bit of the rabbit)

Hi SPH, did that, let her have a munch on the kidney, she was fine with it without the fur on, not happy with it on at all, not fed her any as Im leaving in the freezer to eliminate any worms, how long do you suggest to make sure all cysts are dead ?

To be honest mate, one freshly caught rabbit isnt going to infest you pup with worms. but a couple of weeks in the freezer will do it. Just try the pup wish some fresh meat (rabbit)

She loves it mate, was just a bit concerned that she ran a mile when she saw the rabbit with it's coat on, nipped to the butchers yesterday and he gave me loads, cow lungs, chicken carcus, meaty bones, and liver and kidney, loves the BARF diet, lioke I said the first seight of the rabbit and she was off, hopefully just her age, oh just a quick thought......if I feed her them whole, with the fur, head an all, when she catchers.......will she attempt to eat it ?
