Very nice pup, best of luck with him, I found my saluki x very frustrating to train, she would often cop a deaf un' recall only when it suited her, she also enjoyed coursing the local trains!! and I very nearly threw the towel in a couple of times, however after talking to a very expirienced dog trainer and reading a couple of books, I quickly realised it was my approach that needed to change.

I changed methods to a less ortodox one, and the results where evident within days. Saluki's and crosses with thier blood are not thick as a lot of people say, they just require a slightly different approach. To say they are thick is a real cop out.

She still has a very independant streak and is headstrong, but has improved 100%, still room for more improvement, but she is only young, don't even bother shouting or being heavy handed, there really is little point, as they don't respond to it (I did not try being heavy handed, did a fair bit of shouting though :icon_redface:) best tip i was given was when you are about to loose it, just turn and walk away ;).

there are lads on here far more expierienced with this breed than I will ever be, hopefully one will come along soon and give you more advice than i can,, atvb Richard

Very headstrong! I have to wlk in the opposite direction to get him back sometimes.

I would love to hear some advice from how to effectively.

Mine was moaning this morning so i threw a glass of wate over his head, might have been a bit heavy handed, but then mosty people think I am too soft with my dogs.... :air_kiss:

I find this method by far the best way to teach a dog to be quite in a kennell, they learn really quickly and after all it's only water.,i've seen other's be far more harder with their dogs.

I would also say that you need one on one training time with your pup, just you and him no distractions, make it fun and end training as soon as he starts to loose interest. Socialise him loads and give loads of praise when he gets things right.

Hi there we have a bull whippet/greyhound/saluki bitch. She is now 7 mths old (sorry no pic just yet) As I already own two headstrong terriers I have found her a breeze!! However I have noticed at times a small reluctance to come back to us but her nature is such that if you repeat ''good girl, good girl'' and crouch down she more often than not comes to you wagging her tail. Once she has had her runs and tired a bit she will walk well to heel rest of the walk, cant say the same for the terriers though!!! We still have a way to go with her but have patience and take things slowly and I'm sure your pup will be fine. We look forward to her first catch but I wont be aiming for that until at least october/november time. Any more advice for us also welcome.

to get my saluki pup to come back by me and my mum taking her to a enclosed field i stood at the top and she was at the bottom and we let her off and after a 5 min run i would call her and put my right arm out and shout come and at first at took a long time for her to come but she did and she got rewarded and after a while of that my mum would call her praise her then id call her from the top of the hill and praise her so she would run between us, and then put the dogs fav toy inbetween me and my mum and called her and shouted leave it when she went for the toy and rewarded her for coming so that hopefully in the future when i call her she will avoid destration and come,

try not to get irrated with him just completely blank him off if he does anoy you if any of mine does anything really bad and i get really annoyed i lock them in a room on there own then he crys and crys but i only let him out when he stops crying otherwise its like saying when you sulk you get your own way

i know how anoying they can be lol i took my male out for a long walk and half way through he'd had enough and threw himself on the floor in the shade lol

My lurcher is only 17 weeks and at first she was a nightmare. Jumping, snapping, chasing the cat and generally being a hooligan and she did not give a damn about recall or retrieve it was as if we were invisible to her, it was her world and we nearly gave up wanting out of it.

We had read loads of books and watched DVD’s on training but she did not respond, in the end I gave up and went to a puppy training class.

In the first class we only learnt the sit, stay, and come commands but how to do them properly. We were also introduced to the dog whistle. Letting her off the lead in a safe environment with other dogs her own age and with other people helped no end as did the training. That was 4 weeks ago, she was by far the most excited and out of control puppy there so much so I emailed the trainer to apologise for her disruptive behaviour afterward. Within a week she had become so much better and with practice 2 or 3 times a day she is now a changed dog. A water pistol sorted the cat chasing to a point where they will now stand next to each other waiting to be fed and sit on the sofa together.

The whistle recall is amazing, I the spent the first week in the house every now then giving a couple of pips and then give her a treat straight away, this then moved to the garden then I would hide or call her from the house when she was out, always giving a treat. I will now walk with her off the lead and I can stop he full flight chasing a ball or running off to another dog. She has not come across a rabbit yet!

She is still the most, lively at the classes but by far the best at recall, well the fastest anyway.

Patience and enjoyment help as does a pocket of treats.
