lakeman 12
im saying that the people that own the show/racing lurchers r putting them into lamping/hare classes and working terrier classes and winning thats the joke them dogs have never seen a rabbit in there life never mind been out on the lamp. or dug to a fox.WHO did win this super barbour coat i didnt stay long enough to find out.i bet u it wasnt a true hunter. What was the winning dog. like i said, i judged the lurchers and many of them showed signs of work.... we decided to give the best in show to a border (although they are not my 'bag' it was the finest example i have seen for many years. and, yes, it showed signs of work. although it was a 'show' and not a trial so as for the supreme champion as well as all the other dogs in the show i can not comment on their working ability. that is for the man that feeds them, walks them and cleans out their sh#t. Thank you again for all those involved and for making my trip to Shanes castle a memorable experience. Y.I.S. Mick
kirstysdad 827
i know the terrier judge who went over to this show he phoned me before he went and when he returned he was disappointed at the number of working dogs on show he expepted more i have known him a long time and he told me he give the top prize to the border as on the day it was the best their people are getting away from what terrier and lurcher shows are all about its to meet some mates old and new and have the crac and a few beers maybe even arrange a few days out to see these dogs work its not about winning big money and new coats this is one of the reasons i dont go to shows anymore unless it is to meet some mates and catch up the last time i was at shanes was in 1990 and the welsh in 1997 if you are so interrested in rossettes and prizes go the whole hog and get yourself some pedigrees and line up for crufts

neil cooney 10,416
First of all I take my hat of to Albert J for coming on here and talking to the terrier and lurcher fraternity, of which he's not a member but I'm sure is a supporter. IMO I think it is unfair to compare this years Moira and Shanes Castle Game Fairs as Shanes got the weather, Moira didn't. Over the years a lot of Irelands terrier and lurcher men and women have come to recognise that the organisers of the terrier and lurcher show at Shanes is ran by individuals who are in it for self gain. From the people I've spoken to this has done damage. JMHO
tango 221
simple to sort ,run a poll on here which is the best shanes or moira then that sorts it,i would do it but dont know how to set it up,
Guest ladyjane
Why not just be happy that there are game fairs organised and run over here! Does it really matter which is the best? As a member of the paying public I pay my money and take a chance, anything run at Shanes is going to have an advantage because of the venue, Moira is a good fair, but not so good venue, and as for Ballywalter, well it failed miserably as a fair, even with the grand setting. As for the working dog shows, without the organisers and judges we do not have a show to complain about, it's always easy to critisize from the ringside, how many of the moaners on here have actually ran a show or stood in the middle of the ring and took the insults? As for all the shouting about working dogs, or the lack of them, winning at these events, they are not working trials, you cannot judge a dogs working ability in the show ring, and don't go on about dogs being marked, one of the "best" marked up dogs I ever saw got his war wounds running through a glass door!!! So lighten up, just be glad we have fairs and shows to go to over the summer, after all, none of them are compulsory to attend!!!!
jpnixon 7
naw it is true all the shows seem to turn into a crufts rejects when it comes to judgin dont get me wrong am not knocking the judges or anything but they can tell by looking at a terrier or lurcher if it has seen any work, so why is it show dogs win all the time  but the gamefairs are just a good day out and an excuse to get bladdered and have abit of craic thats the way i see them anyways, just thought i'd give my two pence worth

Story Man 0
What a load of rubbish! People vote with their feet and don't believe the hyperbole. Get a life Mr Tittering and associates. Ok your show's the best, the biggest and has the widest aisles, best acts etc. Who gives a damn? I know which events I attend here and on the mainland. I go because I enjoy them and not because someone tells me they are something they are not! Let's stop sniping and get on with the important things in life. SM

TomW42 0
just an honest question where dose the money collected from terrier and lurcher people at birr gate money dog entry go dose in go into promoting hunting in ireland i would like u to answer this as a lot of us would like to surport this gamefair or dose it line certain induvidaul pocket as reported put us straight once and for all Madra, Not ducking question but I can't give you full details as I do not organise the show or even the T&L event but simply help with the T&L shows and racing including promoting them. I know that our club ( Mid Antrim ) receives all the money from T&L entries and that goes towards Trophies & Rosettes , prize money, expenses, insurance and if any left over to club funds. I understand that is the same for all the competitions. I presume the gate money goes towards covering the overall costs in good and bad years, and supporting the overall prize fund - the organisers Albert, David, Irene and Philip top up the prize fund in all the sports including Terriers & Lurchers including joint sponsorships. That's why all the competitions have the best prizes of any of the shows plus obviously things like ground rental, arena events, insurance, tentage , advertising etc. Plus I know from the magazine Albert sponsors all sorts of events, competitions and organisations including fishing, red grouse, falconry, woodcock association etc - we've told him its time gave the Terriers & Lurchers some of this major sponsorship! If you want further details of where the gate money goes why not email him on irishgamefair@btinternet.com Now - why not ask the organisers of the Moira and Mullingar Fairs or their supporters where the terrier and lurcher money goes there - it certainly doesn't appear to appear as prizes. In fact their web sites don't appear to advertise the prize structure.
Guest madra rua
how many members has yer club a lot of terrier and lurcher people wont support it me included have no problem paying at gate as i understand how much it cost to run show if the money collected in both terrier and lurcher rings went to any charity north or south of the border everybody would support it we in the south have been inform that a certain man gets the money himself and has done for years its only hearsay so if u could clear this up i would be great full urs in sport red dog
