Springer as a lurcher

I am getting a springer spaniel and i am wondering if i can use a springer as a lurcher when ferreting.

Don't see why not mate. Good nose, quick enough to catch a fleeing rabbit in ferreting circumstances... If a terrior is quick enough I'm sure a spaniel is too. All the springers I know are a bit highly strung though, hope you know what your letting yourself in for lol.

Not my choice personally.You won't be able to use it for shoot over if you allow it to chase! If you want a Rabbit dog then get one of the smaller whippet crosses, as you want something that is quick off the mark.

Yes my wee spaniel pegs them a beauty as they bolt, she also works on a regular basis picking up and beating on the estate I work at.

She 'knows' the rabbits she can chase and those she can't.

They are very versatile dogs I've used mine for bushing to the lurchers, flushing to hawk and falcon as well as ferreting, beating and picking up.

Very versitle indeed. only ever had two, too much for me but I do enjoy watching good dog work in the shooting field. I'll stick to my labs for shooting, my lab x spinone for the hawking and my little wabbit dog for the wabbits!! What est. is it that you work or can't you say?

My springerXterrier will get her first season ferreting this year, had a go at the end of last. She will b 4 soon, and has only just settled enough to work ferrets, was always far to excitable. Marks a treat and smart enough to pick holes they will bolt from.

was wondering about springer for rabbits daytime, specially flushing to the lurchers, only thing think would lack is opening up, what terrier is your springer x with ferreterni? is it first x?

I was stupid enough to get talking to the breeder about his lurchers and forgot to see the terrier. I have seen pictures of beddyXspringers which are similar, but I think she's lakey type, bloke kept lakeyXborders too. Is a first cross to. Like a big hairy springer, but hard when she fights with the jrt. Lifts young rabbits in long grass and retrieves live. Easy to train but if she don't think there's anything to hunt she just walks to heel. Great retreiver. Wouldn't keep one again though. PatXcocker seems interesting, but there is just better dogs than this type for working. But I wouldn't change her for the world.

ive got a pat x cocker, bred by dogs-and-natives from this site. she is 6mnths old. bags of energy. i am training her to the whistle at the moment. i intend to use her in the beating line next season (2010) and as a rough shooting dog, if i can train her to the standard required. looks like a lab puppy at the moment, smooth coated and quite slight built. she is smooth haired, but carries her tail high, like a terrier. i will post some pics when i get the camera back from my mate.
