eye but wud she take anythink apart from bunnies tho ie somthink with teeth

Don't the rabbits near you have teeth? :hmm:

I am sorry, on re reading your post i see you mentioned apart from bunnies.

In answer to your question . . . . No i don't think she would, which i'm rather pleased about really as i do believe any quarry with "teeth" other than rabbits is illegal  . . . . . unless you mean rats? . . . . She takes them without problem. ;)

i ment before the ban thats if she is older then 2 ;)

She is 5, and no she wouldn't have taken pre ban Foxs. Again it's what you want a dog for, i work very closely with my local Fox Hunt and have done for years before the ban was in place, so wouldn't have been popular if i'd kept lurchers for foxs! :clapper:

I'm glad this thread had been started . . . .I have a dalmation X bearded Collie, accidental mating. I brought her as a pet . . . . . without doubt the best dog i have ever owned, her drive and ability is amazing, intelligent, stamina un matched by anything i've had her out with, excellent feet, and immense athletic ability.

Now i'm not saying this is the case for all dalmation X's she may be a 1 off, but she is a fantstic all round dog. She "works" with the other dogs and will take bunnies daily on her walks, she also takes birds from the air regulary with no problem.

A lot of the lurcher men round near me that have seen her, always comment on her and ask what cross she is . . . . leaving them red faced! A very knowledgable lurcher guy i know well has taken her out ferreting and was desperate to put a grey hound over her to add the speed, i've no doubt they would make fantastic pups.

I've had her spayed as i would never breed a litter without a real purpose, but to be honest the more i see her out and about in the field the more i wish i hadn't.

I've been slated on this sight for saying the above before . . . . . . . and no doubt will be again. I AM NOT recommending everyone start adding Dalmation blood to the lurcher world, i just think that sometimes an open mind on these matters helps, the phrase don't knock it till you've tried it is another of my fav's!

Here she is.

You say she is the best dog you've ever owned, can I ask how many dogs have you owned? And why did you allow someone else to take the best dog you ever owned out ferreting?

I've owned 7 dogs and by "the best dog i've ever owned" i was not insinuating the best "working dog" i've ever owned. She was taken out ferreting by a lovely old boy near me that was looking after her whilst i was on holiday. Hope that answers your rather bizarre, nick picking, trouble starting question.

A fox dog ain't the be all and end all to some of us major1 ;) ,after all wouldn't you rather have a rabbit casserole for tea than a fox curry :clapper: .The bitch suits Hannah's type of hunting & mooching so thats the main thing isn't it :D ,i quite like the phrase of "don't knock it until you've tried it" ;) ,how many of you are just going on hearsay about this cross? They are not too common so imo i think one or two are talking on a subject they know knack all about? All the best PP.

I dunno... you ask a simple question and all you get is a volley of abuse...... Kids these days...... Thanks for taking the time to answer my bizarre questions and see your lovely auld man that took your lurcher out working while you were away, I hope you gave him permission and I for the love of me can't imagine why anyone would. It would need to be a very close relative that took my dogs out hunting without me and even then he'd need to make sure he had his passport in order incase something happened.......

I agree none of us know anything about the cross but surely common sense prevails. Dalmations have been around for a long time as someone pointed out regarding them being used next to carriage horses. BTW, I think they were used for status rather than actually doing a job. Anyhow, they have been around a while so it isn't a new breed. Now, if they could add anything to the lurcher don't you think like the collie, the guys in the past who actually needed a lurcher to survive might have used them and therefore they'd be as common as muck? As the guys said earlier, stick to the common crosses, the tried and tested crosses, the ones than have been arounds for generations, they've lasted the test of time for a reason. You wouldn't use a cart horse to win the grand national for a reason.... each animal has it's purpose and dalmations are only good for posers who buy a dog for its looks.......... hasn't my saluki got lovely feathered ears... :air_kiss:

here mate i have had dogs all my life and not once heard of [NO TEXT TALK] owning a dalmation so keep out of stuff you dont no about and for your info all my dogs bring bunnys back alive and murder foxes before the ban like

I had a mate who had a dalmation as a working dog. It was not by choice, but his Partners kid had to have one when a 101 dalmatians was on in the flix, after the novelty wore off and the dog grew up a bit, my mate decided to start taking it out with his terriers for a bit of exercise, and much to his astonishment and delight took to foxing (pre ban of course) like the proverbial duck.

The dogs would draw them out of the ground as sweet as a nut, which was quite handy really as my mate happened to come accross quite a few in his wanderings. I can assure you this is true, unusuall granted, but true none the less.

In reply to anonymous :D ,i get what your saying and personally it's not an obvious choice i'd be looking for if i wanted a lurcher BUT like in most crosses there will be good and bad in them, quite likely more bad but to dispel them ALL would be very naieve imo ;) ,as for sticking to tried and tested crosses obviously around 35 years ago the lurcherfolk didn't mind "experimenting" a little,i'm talking about the introduction of APBT blood added into the lurcherworld :D ,a little of track but i'm sure the first to add APBT blood were often called (mad, idiots, foolish) but look where we are at now? I'm not saying for a moment that a Dalmation could influence the lurcherworld as much but like i said earlier i think too many people are keen to knock a cross of lurcher (not just the Dalmation) without any first hand on experience of them? Anyhow, sorry for the long winded reply anonymous ;) ,i certainly know where your coming from with your point of view :D .All the best PP.
