Guest anonymous
In reply to anonymous ,i get what your saying and personally it's not an obvious choice i'd be looking for if i wanted a lurcher BUT like in most crosses there will be good and bad in them, quite likely more bad but to dispel them ALL would be very naieve imo ,as for sticking to tried and tested crosses obviously around 35 years ago the lurcherfolk didn't mind "experimenting" a little,i'm talking about the introduction of APBT blood added into the lurcherworld ,a little of track but i'm sure the first to add APBT blood were often called (mad, idiots, foolish) but look where we are at now? I'm not saying for a moment that a Dalmation could influence the lurcherworld as much but like i said earlier i think too many people are keen to knock a cross of lurcher (not just the Dalmation) without any first hand on experience of them? Anyhow, sorry for the long winded reply anonymous ,i certainly know where your coming from with your point of view .All the best PP. Well put mate and I appreciate your response. Good to read a decent post for a change...(pssst, too many folk on here just to wind up mate.) Anyhow, I know what you are saying mate and at the end of the day, we aren't on this rat infested planet for long so if you want to invent the next best thing to hit the rabbit world by storm, go ahead and good luck. BUT, if your like me, lazy... intelligent, sorry, lazy, want a decent dog that someone else has put all the work into, get yourself the tried and tested ones.... Quote Link to post

As for "kodie" as me auld papa use to say....looks don't catch rabbits and rabbits don't come in cans............ Quote Link to post

To a certain degree anonymous but i'm yet to see a Beagle stand between 20 & 24 inch and weigh around 70lb and i'm not sure if hunting Boar is their strong point? and although they do hunt in packs i'm not sure if Stag hunting is of the norm for them. .All the best PP. Aye mate I hear you but what I was trying to say was, you don't see them being put over a greyhound either even though they have been around for a while and have the hunting spirit. I can see why people would want to have a dalmation cross and maybe before the KC got a hold of them like most breeds, you might have got a decent one but I wouldn't think so now. The best lurchers have got to come from working parents surely. I don't know where the saluki guys get decent pure salukis, are their still some decent ones around? The ore these dogs come into fashion the more the puppy peddlers will dilute the breed till all we have is crap. SHUT CRUFTS DOWN I SAY.... Glad the BBC dropped it Quote Link to post

mackay 3,383
I'm glad this thread had been started . . . .I have a dalmation X bearded Collie, accidental mating. I brought her as a pet . . . . . without doubt the best dog i have ever owned, her drive and ability is amazing, intelligent, stamina un matched by anything i've had her out with, excellent feet, and immense athletic ability. Now i'm not saying this is the case for all dalmation X's she may be a 1 off, but she is a fantstic all round dog. She "works" with the other dogs and will take bunnies daily on her walks, she also takes birds from the air regulary with no problem. A lot of the lurcher men round near me that have seen her, always comment on her and ask what cross she is . . . . leaving them red faced! A very knowledgable lurcher guy i know well has taken her out ferreting and was desperate to put a grey hound over her to add the speed, i've no doubt they would make fantastic pups. I've had her spayed as i would never breed a litter without a real purpose, but to be honest the more i see her out and about in the field the more i wish i hadn't. I've been slated on this sight for saying the above before . . . . . . . and no doubt will be again. I AM NOT recommending everyone start adding Dalmation blood to the lurcher world, i just think that sometimes an open mind on these matters helps, the phrase don't knock it till you've tried it is another of my fav's! Here she is. Personally I'd attribute the qualities mentioned to the bearded collie myself, but I suppose it depends from which angle your looking at it from. Quote Link to post
