He just bought the dog on at a bout 12 months old as he liked the look of it, turned out one hell of a fox dog BUT just incase anyone else thinks its gonna be the same with any Dalmation cross, think again, this was a one off, its brother was just on useless, at any task, scatter brained and a jacker, as i'm sure plenty more would be. The Dalmatian was originally bred as a carrage dog, to run along side the horse drawn carrage for considerable distances to guard against highway robbers. I think that they used to run them in pairs but I'm not sure. But I suspect that introducing the Dalmatian is an attempt to breed dogs of good solid build with loads of stamina! I brought her as a pet . . . . . without doubt the best dog i have ever owned, her drive and ability is amazing, intelligent, stamina un matched by anything i've had her out with, excellent feet, and immense athletic ability. Now i'm not saying this is the case for all dalmation X's she may be a 1 off, but she is a fantstic all round dog. She "works" with the other dogs and will take bunnies daily on her walks, she also takes birds from the air regulary with no problem. A lot of the lurcher men round near me that have seen her, always comment on her and ask what cross she is . . . . leaving them red faced! A very knowledgable lurcher guy i know well has taken her out ferreting and was desperate to put a grey hound over her to add the speed, i've no doubt they would make fantastic pups. I've had her spayed as i would never breed a litter without a real purpose, but to be honest the more i see her out and about in the field the more i wish i hadn't. I've been slated on this sight for saying the above before . . . . . . . and no doubt will be again. I AM NOT recommending everyone start adding Dalmation blood to the lurcher world, i just think that sometimes an open mind on these matters helps, the phrase don't knock it till you've tried it is another of my fav's! I've only ever came across two Dalmation x's in the lurcherworld,one was just ok but the other was a grand type of dog for all aspects of lurcher work .All the best PP. Quote Link to post

I am sorry, on re reading your post i see you mentioned apart from bunnies. In answer to your question . . . . No i don't think she would, which i'm rather pleased about really as i do believe any quarry with "teeth" other than rabbits is illegal . . . . . unless you mean rats? . . . . As i said above she will never be a world beater but i have no doubt adding a little more speed, would produce some cracking lurchers. She is very quick already, and yes she does well on the lamp. The best part of her is the brains she has to match the ability, she will work cover with the terrier, flush a rabbit, catch it, and then. . . . . .run home across 4 fields and hide it before the other dogs get it, before coming back to carry on hunting!
