Big bald beautiful 1,231
Those lads have a bad case of "green eyed monster"often strikes people down who have no sense and cant be arsed to better themselfs. The pup likes fine and should make 24-25, an ideal size for an all round rabbiting dog. my brightest dog was a 3/4 bred, a joy to own and teach and so willing to learn. I have a dog traing book i can post you if you would like it all the best with the pup Quote Link to post
chartpolski 23,604
The dog that won last years Lamping Competition was 27"........ so much for being "to big for rabbits" !! LOL !! Cheers. Quote Link to post
littletimmy 71
Those locals ain't lurchermen bud, there men with lurchers and if thats the sort of advice they give out then go deaf everytime you speak to them.Nice looking pup and she'll be fine on the bunnies. I asked you if my 22" dog was too big for rabbits and you said well too big and i should part-ex her in the local dog-pound for a masstif x great dane as my dog wouldnt be hard enough for rabbits Quote Link to post
MATTI 34
I had i GreyH X DeerH stood at 32" to the shoulder could pick rabbits up as good as any dog i've owned or seen. If she can reach down to eat her grub out of a bowl on the floor she will reach rabbits, good luck with her mate. Quote Link to post
cúagusgiorraí 57
My prediction is 25 inches. She'll be a perfect allrounder. Take it nice and easy over the next year. Enjoy her. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with her ability Quote Link to post
samba 534
had a 31tts deerhound cross in miners strike rabbits were no problem practice makes perfect Quote Link to post
lofti 579
i rekon she will make around 25" which is spot on for bunnies, she will probaly make a good alrounder too . my dad used to have a 26" lurcher that used to take the piss out of rabbits . youve got a nice dog there mate, try not to start her to soon on the bunnies tho, let her grow ,and give her easy ones at first to build her confidence. all the best with your dog. keep us posted lofti. furdy 0
She will be fine, she should make 23-24in, spot on for rabbits. Just take your time with her, 12months old , and just a few runs. Just about spot on I would think.......I wouldnt expect too much from her until she's 18 months old. Between now and then just show her as many different situations as you can. Plenty of socialisation is key. Good luch with her... Quote Link to post

Guest anonymous
My 3/4 grey 1/4 collie bitch pup is just coming up to 5 months, and she's currently 19.5 inches to the shoulder, at around 15kg in weight (see pic attached). She's my first dog and I was wondering if anyone could estimate how tall she's going to get when full grown? I got her for hunting rabbits, but a couple of local lurchermen I've bumped into when walking her have said she's going to be too big for rabbits (not sure if they meant daytime rabbits, on the lamp, or both). I got a collie grey because I'd seen on this forum that they make good lurchers for first time owners, plus they were good all rounders, but now I'm thinking maybe I should have got a beddy whippet instead if I just wanted to hunt rabbits. Not that it makes much difference, as I've invested a lot of time in her and wouldn't give her up and don't have space for a second dog. I just want to get a better understanding of what I should and shouldn't be expecting from her as she matures. Best, JL Lovely bitch mate, your gonna have endless fun with her. I've never seen a dog yet that is too big for rabbits, never known anyone else who has. Seen some monster dogs picking up rabbits for fun. I prefer my dogs to have a bit of height, plenty of fences and walls where I hunt etc. She'll be coming into the right age for the middle of the season so enjoy her mate and don't expect too much this coming season. Like all dogs, she'll have an annoying habit and you'll think she's never going to make the grade then for some reason, one day it will all click. Bit of advice, take what people tell you regarding their or your dogs with a pinch of salt. Just like the bickering on here, no one can see by their own dogs. Finding a true sportsman these days is very rare so people will try to bring your dog down. Don't listen to them. Just the same, it can be bad if someone starts bragging about your dog. Just takes a some clown with a loose mouth to start bragging in the pub your dog can take all sorts of game etc, even though it might not, next thing you know the dogs gone walkies in the middle of the night. I've seen it all and that is why I prefer to chose my hunting companions very carefully. So beware. Quote Link to post
