gun dog opinons

Recommended Posts

i have finally decided that i am going to get my self a another gun dog. but this time i really want a spaniel, and i am stuck between a cocker or a springer, could any one give me some advice on which one would be better for me.

I do alot of rough shooting so i am looking for a dog that doesn't mind flushing and also able to retreive. i have always been told the dog for this is a springer spaniel but recently alot of people have told me the cocker is more adaptided to this kind of work.

any help will be great

Both dogs will be great for that type of shooting, basicaly its down to what you prefer.

If you have hare and geese on your shoot a bigger dog would be more suitable.

Get one of these from Peter Jones.

I've got the black one in the middle with two white spots, they are really easy to train and very biddable. Mine is from a mating with his sons bitch, I would recommend them without hesitation.

His prices from his litter were level with what others were charging, but the other litters did not have the same level of quality.

Give him a ring, he's a really nice bloke and he will be able to sort you out

I rang him as i was after a cocker bitch, he didnt have any he said he'd have a look round for me ( i didnt think any more of it) The next day i had an answer phone message him, saying he had rung aroud a few places and found a cocker bitch for me.

I found him realy helpful.

Hi

First off, i hope which ever spaniel you choose works out for you, and if it does'nt, stick with it...which ever spaniel you choose as your first is going to give you good days and bad day's, part of life is learning from your mistakes, and there's plenty of help available out there, one day you'll want to give the spaniel up to a free home, the next day he/she will will be irreplacable...

end of the day make a decision, if its a spaniel....you won't go far wrong.

Hi all this is my first post,

ive trained both cockers and springers, in my opinion i would say cocker if you have the time on your hands, as in the long run a good well bred working cocker is a joy to watch,

and have bags of driver, but you have to put the time in from day one, they can be hard headed but if you put the time in its worth it, and you have to bring out there abilitys

as for a springer they are good dogs and have a good hunting instinct and are A1 retrivers from day one, you should be able to go to a well bred working litter and have there bringing a rolled up sock back to you at 8 week..

so in a nut shell if you want a challenge have a cocker if not go for a springer..

best thing would to find someone local to you and pop round and see a trained cocker do its thing and find trained springer do its thing...

and it all depends on your Knowledge and gundog training ablity.

all the best

Both types are ideal for the roughshooter but it can depend on the terrain you hunt and the time you spend out hunting .The springer is or should be longer in the leg and a bigger biuld than the cocker so if your out all day in heavey going like say heather or windfall maybe springer will be the best, even then you might have to have a couple of springers one to work in the morning and one after lunch as with all spanials they will go all day but when they tire they stop entering heavy cover and can miss game.cocker i,ve not had one but been out hunting whith them in the line a good un,s bloody great to see working miss nowt .So your hunting ground could be a factor when you make a choice or you could get one of each L.O.L Just another thought if your after hares ar rabbits all day or birds it can take a lot of effort from the dog to retrieve all day and birds ar'nt as heavy. probably going to get some stick from the cocker owners but hey it,s only my take on this subject.goodluck.
