Sorley x 32
Relax you still have a pup on your hands. Collie crosses need a bit of time to mature, wont start muscling up for a few months yet. Take it easy, let her mature at her own pace. She'll have pace enough for lamped rabbits, plus she'll have brains to make it look easy after a season. You dont have a point and run machine there. I'm guessing your mates is a different cross to yours. So it will mature differently and end up with different attributes. If he has gone for an out and out speedster, he may look great for a couple of nights but you'll be out bagging rabbits whilst he's waiting for his dog to mend again. Good luck with her. JordKil 0
Nice looking pup im a fan of the collie crosses myself smart dogs. My collie/springer is what i use for lamoing and a cross like him aint near as fast as a lurcher but can damn still do they job its his fancy footwork, brains and stamina that catches the rabbits not his speed so keep him fit and he'll do you well plus he is only 9 months so dont over do it you've got a dog with good potential dont let it go to waste. Malt 379
I'm sure she'll be fine. At 9 months, she'll only just be starting to pick up speed, you'll notice the difference over the next few months. Quote Link to post
matty73 4
dogs mature slower than bitches, everything will fall into place with him as his confidence and the bond between you grows in time and you will wonder what you were worried about ,good things come to those that wait. BLUCHER 1
Nine months its still a pup, dont listen to people telling you theirs were doing the buisness at that age, its usually bollox. Stick with it mate carry on training and it will come good, some of the best dogs ive seen were late starters. One in particular was nearly 18 months before it caught its first rabbit, fortunately the owner wasnt a jacker and now you couldnt buy that dog for love nor money. Good luck ATB. Quote Link to post
Neal 1,866
Patience Grasshopper: I've got a nine year old kelpie with a dodgy pelvis who didn't catch his first rabbit until he was five but he's since caught more rabbits than my previous lurchers...admittedly my lurchers were crap but... inan 841
thanks everyone and hello t cant wait for the harvest the permission is mounting up,just had a couple of hours out 2 more for the pup and home.i guess im just thinking off the coming season i will have some stiff competition as a few of the lads have some very handy dogs coming on and as we run for kebabs and a pint or two i dont want to be known as the meal ticket like one of the lads was a couple of years back. I'm sure he will come good for you.Lets have a bit more rain to soften the ground a bit, I'll give you a ring . He's a nice looking pup.I'll buy the kebabs win or lose.Take care fella. springerman 2
my pup is at the 9 month mark and has had a few rabbits ,he a crackin little dog that is jumping small stuff and retrieving,he is 20" and loves a bit of bushing as well, but i am worried that when winter sets in he wont be quick enough for the more experienced seasoned bunnies as all he has caught so far are adolecents in easy terrain for him i.e long tuffty grass.he looks to have a fair bit of collie in him(not 100% on his breeding)which i think maybe part of the reason, how much speed do you think he will get will it increase as he matures,i know he is only a pup but my mates pup is the same age and like s..t of a shovel. i think youll find what he lacks in speed he will make up for with brain most collie based lurchers will outwit there prey he looks a smart pup stick with him im sure he will repay you tenfold Quote Link to post
