lurcers give up retreiving

Recommended Posts

just a couple things really

first off. got 2 4month old lurchers (1st time in owning my own dogs) . one of them was starting to retrieve realy well but now out of some where has lost all interest, and the other just picks the dummy up runs off and trys ripping its apart, any idea on how to get him to stop this and also get the other back to it, and the one that fights the dummy i call him but he just looks at me and when i keep calling or show a treat he drops the dummy, any ideas thanks

second. funny enough the one that fights the dummy, wont stop moaning all the time he's in the garden, they got food and ater, but he just sits at the door moaning like a little bitch that he is, any ideas cos dont want to feck next door off.

lastly, what age do people recommend starting to work lurchers they whippet x collie grey whippet. i know people say wait till they mature but how can you tell the pups hav matured, and will it take longer for these 2 to mature as they are litter buddies.

thanks all

Turk, to be honest mate, your first mistake was trying to bring on two pups at the same time, it's a nightmare, even for very good trainers and for your first time with your first dogs you have a mountain to climb.

But things can be done, start by training them seperate, for retrieving training the golden rule is, IT MUST BE A GAME, play it for little bursts, give lots of praise and quit whilst the pup is still goin nuts for the dummy, put it away, next time it'll know how much fun it is and probs try even harder.

As for recall, again seperate, quiet places, call only when the pup 'might just be ready' to come back, that is, if you let it off and it picks up a scent and is keen as mustard on it, it'll deaf you out, wait untill its looking for sommat next and then call, in your daftest nicest voice, crouching down can help too and again lots of praise and maybe a treat.

For when to start 'em...... After you have all of the bad points above ironed out!!

Best of luck ;)
