shotgun help NEEDED!

im wanting to get my first shotgun soon, ive had very little experiance with them but i was going to go clay shooting over the summer holidays. im 16 at the moment and a resonbable build (not sure if this has much to do with it)

i was thinking of a 20 bore, for shooting pigions, crows etc.

i was also wanting to join a rough shoot that meet just out side my house

i dont want to spend much on a second hand one (thinking £250-300 tops)

ive noticed that single barreled ones are fairly inexpencive, or are they more hassel than theyr'e worth?

i also like the look of the hammer guns, is there any pros/cons to them over standard side by sides or over and unders?

 

are there any cheap brands that are no good that i should look out for?

i have asked similar questions so the advice i have been given is go to your local gun shop often not actually that local

 

have a look at what they have but more importantly pick them up and see what fits YOU 12 or 20 bore is good

 

then see what you want to spend and bare in mind you will need a cabinet and licence if you dont have them already. i have just sent my application off and i cant wait now and get in some practice on clays and get someone who really knows what they are talknig about to help you out with your stance and aim/point

You mention quite a few different uses for which you`d use a shotgun. Clays, rough shooting, pigeons, crows etc... If you want just the one gun for all use, id tend to go for a semi automatic. This would have the advantage that you have reduced recoil bearing in mind your age, 3 shots rather than 2, and can use the same gun for everything. You can pick up a new hatson escort for around £300 or a 2nd hand older model Beretta.

 

Alternatively, you could go for a nice 2nd hand o/u. Maybe something like a lanber which should be within that price range.

 

Id personally go for 12bore, more cartridge choice and works well for most people.

hi,

 

aviod hammer guns, you have to manuly cock them and if ur rough shooting and a bird jumps up infront of you, you have to cock the hammers, aim then fire, also single barrels are giving you one less chance, & how will you shoot all them left and rights lol. most guns are ok but there are always bad ones inamongst the decent stuff beretta, browning , baikial or miroku will do you fine, better to get something decent instead of wasting your money.

Id go for a 12 bore O/U its what i started off with about 16 or so years ago when I was your age, you will be well able for it. As has been said go to your local firearms dealer and try as many shotguns as you can, remember its all about fitting you right. Take an experienced shooter along with you to see what way the gun is fitting you when it is mounted. A nice secondhand Lanber or a baikal (workhorse of guns). Try stay away from yildiz they kick like a mule :vava: have heard some bad reports on them.

Try all the used o/u's in your price range and find what fits you best - a good deeler should be able to check fit properly. Look out for Lanber, Bettinsolli, Baikal, Lincoln and Browning medalists - all should be about for less than £400

 

I'll second the others about going for a 12b - cartridges are far cheaper and there's a lot more to choose from against 20b.

Just to mirror what everybody else is saying.

Go for 12b over and under, it'll do all that you mentioned

you want it to do and you'll get a really decent one on your

budget. Plus more choice of of shotgun and more choice of

cartridge.

if you need a gun to do it all out in the field get your self a light weight 3 shot auto 12g shooting 32gn no5 shot shells ..if your just doing clays get your self an o/u and use no 7 1/2 shells or like me get both ..you can have as many shots guns on your ticket as you like

go with what all the lads are saying and get a 12 bore o/u .u wont go wrong with it aslong as it fits. also if you are shooting with other guys especially older men they dont like the idea of a gun u cant tell if its loaded or not. so stay away from the semi auto for now till you get experience. all the best with it.

Hi Mate I just saw an AYA Yeoman O/U in the for sale ads. Multichoke single trigger for around £270 I think.

My mate has one and it shoots real well. Not over heavy and well made.

Don't forget, you can get 21gram loads in 12 bore. They don't have a huge kick.

 

I have a Franchi Hunter 12 bore semi auto for sale, but I reckon it'd be too punchy if you're worried about that aspect.

Don't forget, you can get 21gram loads in 12 bore. They don't have a huge kick.

Dont be worrying about the recoil at all, this sometimes makes people quite nevrous re shooting. Hold the gun well into you shoulder and lean in and you will be grand. Now it has got a bit of kick but if you do the basics you will be grand and will hopefully enjoy it. Might be worth your while to meet up with some regular guys that shoot and go throught the basics with them or get a lesson or two.
